I have recently bought a boat and the deck is in need of some work. The paint is cracking and peeling, in some cases right back to the fibreglass. It looks as though it has been put on with a wallpaper brush! Do I need to strip it all back, which would be a rather massive undertaking, or is there some other way that I could do it? Any suggestions?

G'day Justabout, welcome to the YBW forums.

Cracking and peeling is an indication of poor preparation, confirmrd by the fact it's coming away from the original deck.

Adding more coats will cure the problem, why not just chip off all the loose bits and go sailing, you can do a bit more chipping when not sailing, like the end of the season or when resting at anchor off some sandy island.

If you find yourself next to a pressure washer you might be able to speed up the removal of paint flakes, but be warned, pressure cleaners can cause more problems, do not get the tip too close to the fibreglass or you will create pin holes.

You are about to discover the only two things you will have time for.
1. Go sailing whenever you can.
2. Do some maintenance whenever you can't.

Avagoodweekend......
