Deck Plate Key?

Hi all,

I was looking through the various bits n bobs on my new to me boat the other weekend and I found a Deck Plate key. Can someone tell me what it is for please?

I know it must be quite important as it has a float attached.

Tank filler cap opener

unscrewing the plugs for oil and water fillers. I 'have also seen big ones for inspection covers.


BTW, if you remove a plug, check that the O ring is making a good seal when you replace it. If it leaks, it will allow contamination from rain, sea spray and bird poo into the tanks.

Oh so that's what it's for... I was using a ring spanner and screw driver to open the fuel filler cap.

Thanks for the advice about O rings I'll check 'em next time I'm down!

And while you are attit...always put the cap in your pocket and don't leave it on deck....they have a habit of rolling off and going plop in the briny...very annoying..
