I have removed some old and tired treadmaster from by deck and I now want to paint it. Following the removal of the treadmaster I have sanded down to clean GRP to remove all traces of the adhesive, degreased and filled. It is ready to paint, but I have a problem in choosing the paint to use.
International Interdeck is available here in Turkey where my boat is moored but there is no suitable colour. International make a non-slip additive to use with their topside paints, but none of them come in a suitable colour either. [My boat’s hull and deck are light green]
A local Chandler sells Standox Multimix which could be mixed to any colour on earth. Unfortunately, the chandler speaks very little English and the paint comes with no instructions. What I have been able to glean is:
Standox paint is really made for cars, but he (the chandler) sells a lot of it for use on yachts.
It can be mixed with matting agent to give a matt finish and have a non-slip additive mixed in.
The solvent that the chandler sells to use with it says on the tin: ‘Acrylic Auto Thinner’ and it contains ‘Xi’ which. I believe, is Xylene.
If there are any paint chemists out there I would dearly like answers to the following questions, but any general thoughts would be equally appreciated.
1. Do you think the paint is likely to be suitable for use as deck paint on a GRP yacht?
2. Is it likely to need a primer, and if so, what sort of primer?
3. Is it likely to need an undercoat, and if so, what undercoat?
4. If it does not need a primer or undercoat, would it help to dilute the first coat with thinner?
5. Could I paint it over the top of a conventional deck paint such as International Interdeck which has a White Spirit base? [I am wondering about using one coat of Interdeck followed by one or two coats of the Standox.]
Any help will be very gratefully received.
