Hi , Some time ago I have purchased a hull of Feeling 39 . We have removed the damaged deck and decided to redesign the boat into a live-aboard saloon deck cruiser (so to hopefully finally circumnavigate the globe)
I have the plans for the new deck and the whole of the interior . What I need now, is to purchase the right gear.
Wonder if there anybody that would be willing to guide me into what to buy ( for now:) for the deck ( hatches, cleats, winches, dorade vent. etc etc ) .
Help will be greatly appreciated . Tom

One tip, when I was doing a major refit on another boat some years ago, I phoned around UK trade distributors and managed to open accounts at far better prices than chandlers. They won't mess around for a few quid but if you have a list totaling several thousand, they may deal.

Thanks guys, but to be honest Id prefer something that I can rely on regardless of name and beauty :) Any ideas for hatches please? T

For hatches try Seateach chandlery at Emsworth, Hants; they do all makes and sizes I've ever heard of at relatively good prices ( spares like seals too ). I got my lewmar Ocean hatch & Atlantic portlight from them; they do mail order I'm sure.

Top Tip; if visiting in person beware the huge, car - wrecking potholes on the approach road; the manageress told us when we mentioned them that a delivery driver had bitten through his tongue when he hit one !

Unfortunately before I got the hull everything else been sold.

Hope you understand what you are taking on. You will need to spend two or three times what the eventual boat is worth to build a complete boat from a hull, never mind the 3000 man hours minimum to complete it.

The market is awash with perfectly good complete working boats for a fraction of what you will have to spend. A hull of an out of date, not particularly popular boat is essentially worthless - which is why all the other bits have been sold.

Suggest you go round the Southampton Boat Show and price up all the bits you need. The trade suppliers exhibit there, and as suggested you will be able to get discounts for the volume of gear you will be buying. However, this is likely to be typically 20% or less. Remember that a complete new boat of this size and type typically costs £200-250k and you need to buy at least £40% of the materials (assuming you have engine and running gear). So you are looking at around £100k in materials.

Lewmar make reliable hatches, Ocean Series is designed for Code 0 boats, they also make reliable winches and deck gear. My yacht is going for 42 years and the Lewmar Winches are still going strong, hatches now need replacing, though, the boat has done at least one Atlantic circuit: -

Harken deck gear is top stuff and what I have used (travellers, kickers, tracks, blocks, jam / cam cleats) performed well and was easy to use, I can't comment on reliability as I have only used the stuff on other peoples boats, but quality equipment, never the less : -

Vetus supply lots of marine equipment including all deck gear, their equipment has a decent reputation: -

One problem I guess you won't have as you are designing and building a new decks trying to fit current hatch dimensions into old hatch cut out sizes. The sizes are not standardised so it can be an issue.
