Some of the caulking on my deck needs redoing.

What alternatives are there to Sikaflex 290i DC and Sikaflex Primer 290 DC?

Any good tips for getting a good result?

I've had Saba highly recommended, by a chippie who lays decks regularly out here in Greece. His second choice is Simson (also Dutch, but owned by the Bostik group). I've just re-laid my cockpit seats using Simson (Saba not so easily available): did the job just fine. However I prefer the Sikaflex 298 bedding compound to the Simson product: it's significantly less viscous and goes on more easily.

Best way to pare back the cured caulking: back of a very sharp chisel, kept wet.

Any tips on digging out the old stuff, or on priming the sides of the groove?

A good command of the below decks vocabulary is helpful for a start!

Really depends on how much you have to do, but a Knife to clean the edges and a sharp tool to lift the old stuff. If you have a lot to do you might consider either a Dremel or a router. If you are going to the bottom of the seam then you need to consider using a breaker tape to stop it from sticking to the bottom of the seam.

I used Pur-flex marine caulking...... when I did mine I bought a load from vitesse marine in Fareham... lot cheaper than the silkaflex and as good...... this was about six years ago and was about £3 a tube.....

Tips for caulking get yourself a decent caulking gun or buy one that you can rig up to a compressor, if you have loads to do - otherwise your knacker your arm up.

Excellent product - I've used it for my new teak decks.

BTW jfm of Match fame on the Motor Boat Forum has used this caulk in white on his latest boat Match2.

If you google SIS 440 - TDS TEAK DECK CAULKING you'll find plenty of info on the forums from yachties using it to renovate, not just when laying new.

It was a few years ago so I have managed to erase some of the gory details from my mind.

I recaulked a 14m deck saloon ketch. Removed old caulking with a Fein Multimaster and its special tool. Used small Bosch router (Trimmer) with a home made guide to achieve required groove (6mm), applied very fiddly bond breaker tape (3mm - don't use wider or you will have problems getting it to fit) and caulked with Saba Seal One Fast with an electric caulking gun.

Faired off caulking with a Veritas razor sharp Flushing plane once Saba had completely gone off.

Saba had a Youtube video which made it all look like childs play. In fact, every other tube of caulking burst in the gun; don't know why. You would probably hear the screams of anquish five miles away.

Whatever you do, get some quality knee pads!

Horrible job.

Thanks for the encouragement

I used Sealine 100 from Henkel for caulking when I relayed my teak decks five years ago. It is the stuff that HR and some other Scandinavian boat builders use.
This is not PU, but some kind of modified silicone (alcoxy?). It is not cheaper than Sika, but easier to apply as it does not require priming or breaker tape. Still in excellent condition, but five years is a short time.
