Taking my son to see football match at St Marys this afternoon & going on the train from Poole - I cant think of a good walkable pub in S'hampton (Was there 1 called Red lion nr high street) It needs to be reasonably child friendly & preferably not a goldfish bowl. Or any pointers to a similar resturant gratefully received - kids keen on pasta, cow, tapas chips baked beans etc etc.

I did think we might be able to get off train nr moodys & go to the Jolly Sailor (Which i still have a soft spot for in its current guise)

Thanks as ever - -

You could certainly get the train to Bursledon and go to the Jolly then hop back onto a train to St. Mary's. Check which Southampton Station is closest to the ground, I think it might be St. Denys.

I've tended to go to the Waterfront at Shamrock Quay before matches at St Marys, partly because I know it (on account of having friends with boats there) and partly because I could always park there. I believe they do a barbeque on match days.

oxford st would have been my suggestion. plenty of child friendly-ish places and an easy walk to the ground. in addition the ticket does give discounted bus ticket so can park free elsewhere.

FWIW, I mentioned the pub / restaurant forum as I thought it might help others reading, and avoid duplication; I find some of the comments very amusing too !

Sorry if I seemed a bit snappy Seajet. Was in a foul mood here at work yesterday.

I always liked the Dolphin, near St Denys station, when a student there. Possibly changed a lot in the intervening years. Were certainly good restos in Oxford Street then too.

As for the Red Lion- I went back there a couple of years ago (meeting a colleague) and was very disappointed.

MrJemm,

not at all, I didn't take it that way - as I say just thought the specialised forum might have more info, though more frequent updates would help; I suspect a lot of people don't go beyond PBO, Scuttlebutt & Lounge.

Thanks everybody,

I will take a look at the guide in future now i know it is there - certainly should be able to add some info as very well (& expensive) researched over the years.

In case of any interest we found a swifty or 2 @ Shamrock - (If in doubt gravitate towards the water / river worst case there is always boat spotting to fall back on) very civil bar staff & generally ok. Then followed river & walked down to Tapas (Rebatas i think) opp ferry terminal which was very good all in all. (Sort of Southampton Bodega - pretty buildings round there)

Pretty exciting football match as well as they go -the boy very happy anyway.
