I know there was a thread earlier on this subject so apologies, but I've looked at tides and wind and I reckon I will leave....

Woodbridge 12:30 (HW is 16:00)
Deben Bar 14:00 (HW is 15:20)
Orford Bar 15:00 (HW is 15:00)
Orford Quay 16:00 (HW is 16:00)

The wind is SW 3 and I can easily make 5knts (even if I need the iron topsail)
My question is... Does this look do-able or is it all a bit too rushed and hopeful or will I arrive at the Orford Bar as its ebbing at 5 knts an hour later???

I can't leave Woodbridge earlier due to mud! I'll be single handed for the first time so am nervous! The alternative is moor at Felixstowe ferry and go to Orford on Tuesday but not much wind forecast.
Many thanks

You should be fine.

In the past I have entered Orford Haven at local high water and taken the last of the flood in the river up to Orford without incident. Allowing an hour to get between the two rivers should be more than enough as, IIRC, they are about three miles apart.

I assume you have the latest charts for Woodbridge and Orford Havens.

It takes quite a while to motor from Felixstowe Ferry moorings to the Woodbridge Haven so I doubt you will get to Orford as quick as you think...we hope to try it w/c 13/8 so will be interested how you get on...!

Leaving at LW + 3 last weekend I was surprised how little adverse tide I experianced. However if pushed for time, going through the moorings to the South of the Horse can be worthwhile as there is often a back eddy meaning the current is flowing towards the ferry.

I have never dared try that as I am uncertain about depths in there, I have heard of folk going aground, I assumed that the boats moored on that side were all shallow draft? Perhaps I have been misinformed. Certainly the tide in the main channel is pretty fierce, I usually tuck inside some of the moorings and keep out of the worst tide if possible.

We are hoping to go round to the Ore on Monday, from Woolverstone though so no tidal constraints other than at the Ore itself.

We have been round there at about half tide.
Do keep over toward the south bank - between the 1st and 2nd row of moorings.
We touched between the 2nd and 3rd row last year.
There is a good eddy to push you along but it dumps you right the fastest bit of the flood tide bay the Deben PHB.

Have a good trip.

Many thanks for replies - I'll report back afterwards..
I've downloaded the chartlets from eastcoastrivers so should be OK.

Draft is only 1 metre and I've gone through the moorings at Felixstowe ferry without incident a couple of times (even used one of them a couple of times so i could visit the cafe). I hadn't realised there was a back eddy - I'll see if it helps although the current should be easing at HW -1.5 anyway.

Hopefully see Leighb enroute - but I expect you to be there well before me, going in on the tide. Are you intending to moor at Orford, Aldeburgh or anchor somewhere?

Many thanks for checking my times. I really appreciate it.
Fortunately I will be moored just north of Loders cut (will go round not through) - still not much water at 12:30 though and not sure I'll make the bar in 1.5 hours.

My idea of sailing isn't rushing about - so I'll decide when I get to Felixstowe Ferry whether to moor or continue.

It'll be a bit "oh my gawd", but I went up to Tide Mill last week, and arrived early - probably 2.5 hrs before HW which was neaps, and floated happily on a vacant buoy until there was enough to get in, and I draw 1.5m... When you get to the S end of Loders, turning to port at the two PH cans, make sure you spot the first Stbd buoy and keep an eye on it, it got lost behind moored boats for me, and that did give me a moment or two at 0.1 under keel... The right course coming out was fine....

Not sure where we are going initially, we might anchor in the Butley River. Possibly Orford where we have friends. We are planning to get up to Aldeburgh sometime in the week - weather permitting.

We also have a green hull, with beige dodgers and sprayhood. Mind you we almost never have the sprayhood up on passage, only really if the weather is so vile we wished we had stayed at home.
