Deben Entrance Update from John White

Having been in and out again a couple of months ago and left thinking "wots all the fuss about?" I'm now having second thoughts about heading for the Deben on Saturday

Will you lot please stop making me nervous!

First time I went in and out I was terrified having read all the horror stories and expecting to end my days wrecked in sight of the martello tower.......... However, despite all the talk of transits, I wonder if anyone thinks I'm strange in keeping a lookout both ways - behind as well as forward to make sure I'm on a direct line between the two buoys?

If there is an extra buoy now so much the better. I always motor in - sailing a precise straight line is a level of perfection that as yet I can't manage!

I don't think you're strange at all Bob, that's what I do too! Actually, I shall admit that I couldnt find the transit, realised I was getting distracted looking for the transit and found it much easier (and always have found it easier t.b.h.) to watch the buoys and keep a weather eye on the Heading and COG indicators on the chart plotter

Not strange at all, I do the same but with you, the boat in between two fixed points it's only ever going to be a rough guide. Putting the fairway buoy onto the transit giving two fixed points ahead, in or out, solves the problem, at least in goodish viz. Really interested to know why the fairway buoy is where it is and if it can be placed on the transit. I appreciate that that will mean that it has to be moved each year (probably) but it might stop the groundings.

After John White got in touch with us the other day we added some extra comments about using the Deben entrance, in the News section on the home page of our website. It might be teaching Grandma etc etc but we try to please everybody!
