Leaving Felixstowe ferry 2 1/4 before HW, at Mid Knowl I altered course for West Knowl making sure I kept the striped pole in transit. An Island Packet, not flying a pirate flag to comply with club rules, was approaching from the West Knowl and I could see she was being quickly set to the west. What to do? Pass starboard to starboard? Stick steadfastly to the transit until the last moment? Make to pass port to port and risk being set on the shingle? I chose the latter. A mistake! In the event we met at the temporary red buoy with my wife pointing at them to go upwind and tide. I narrowly squeezed between the buoy and their stern with 4/5 ft. under the keel and shouted that the transit was upwind!
Next time I shall stick firmly to the transit and leave the boat being set to the west to go upwind for port to port or be swept towards the bank.
