Just to inform anyone who uses or is thinking of going into the River Deben, Suffolk to take great care as the sand bar at Woodbrige Haven has increased. At low water it is almost at the surface, less than 1ft.

I am not sure of any other safe passage through yet or if they will dredge it but I suspect nothing will happen until the winter storms, in any, pass.

Check here for latest info...

The excellent Woodbridge Cruising Club website has good information on the Deben and Ore entrances.

All the guides say call the Pilot. Do this. I love the Deben dearly, but it is a most difficult entrance even on a 'nice' day.
My personal thanks go to all those who maintain or contribute to the essential local info that is made available for those who make passage through the entrance.

Possible causes

I would say that both the Deben and the Ore bars have become quite markedly worse in recent years. As we all know, these bars are fed by shingle moving South along the coast from places like Dunwich. The shingle just washes along until it gets to Harwich Fairway, at which point Westminster Dredging remove it, and the process starts again, with the Naze cliffs being washed south to form Colne Bar.

As I think we also know, the rate of coastal erosion in NE Norfolk and N Suffolk has increased. Some people, including some experts and the MP for Lowestoft, think that this is connected with recent increases in offshore dredging for aggregates, and are calling for a reduction, if not indeed a ban, in this activity.

It makes sense to me.

Re: Possible causes

I thought the Deben was quite easy last season when the new entrance opened compared to the previous year when the beach entrance got quite narrow. Even if you know the river well, the new chart of the bar, issued in the early season is essential.
