I have not seen any 2011 data on the internet re the Deben Bar. As this is a fairly normal state of events so early in the season I thought the following information might be of use to others.
Up to the weekend 16/17Apr 2011 the Ferry Harbourmaster has been advising people to leave West Knoll (the red buoy) to port by about 50m when leaving the river. However, today (19 Apr 2011) the coast guard were issuing a warning that the buoys had been moved to the following positions and West Knoll should now be left to starboard as usual when leaving the river.
Mid Knoll
51° 58.709N
001° 23.468E
West Knoll
051° 58.359N
001° 23.468E
HW Harwich on 19th Apr was 13.24 - Ht 4.4m. I launched at Larkmans at Melton Bridge at 13.40. (HW Woodbridge 13.56) I normally arrive at the bar almost exactly 2 hours after HW at the Ferry, which on the 19th was at 13.21 and I predicted that at HW +2hrs there would be 2.7m over chart datum.
When we passed the Tidemill Marina the sill gauge was showing 2.5m and as my rule of thumb is that if there is enough water to get over the sill there is enough water to go through Loders Cut that is what we did; minimum depth was 3m. However, someone had missed a withy and was hard aground right at the top of one of the highest tides of the year.
There was only a gentle breeze at the Ferry and the bar was as quiet as I have ever seen it on the ebb. We arrived at Mid Knoll at 15.15. W Knoll appeared to be markedly further west than last year. For most of the track between the buoys the indicated depth was 3.5m. The minimum depth I saw was 3.1m which started at about 50 metres from of W Knoll. The depth increased rapidly when still a boat length short of W Knoll. Compared to my launch last year that was about 0.4m less water and suggests a minimum sounding of 0.4m on the bar at chart datum. I look forward to seeing the East Coast Rivers chartlet to see if I am correct.
I took some video on the way out and if I can work out how to use U-tube I will try and publish it.
