Deben Bar 31st August 2020 Low Water Video

For reference LW at Woodbridge Haven was forecast to be 0.6m over CD for LW @17:33. The live tide level at Harwich showed negligible surge at that time.

That’s enough to scare the willies out of anyone..

No not scary. The Deben is my home mooring and I go over the bar all the time. The Buoys are well placed and if you go at 2 hrs ish each side of high water you will be fine. Just go to the safe water buoy (Woodbridge Haven) and follow the 4 marker buoys in. Once in the river you will be fine. My video was intended to show that you actually have a good width of channel.

What sort of boat have you got

Went out today in the Rib and thought I would test my new Action Cam. Took a video of the entrance from Woodbridge Haven to the Entrance. Pitty about the splash that went on the lens. I was quite impressed with the stabilization in the camera

Here is another video taken the other way round from the River out to Sea. This is before I got the splash on the lens

This video was made about an hour before high water

Yep thank you for the Videos, they show just how much water for navigation in /out that there actually is, far better than any High View which I think makes the Deben entrance appear quite narrow and therfore possibly Daunting an experience.

After all we Seamen have been going in /out the Deben for many many generations, even in our last moments, ie Vikings Burials ?

I really like the video, however I don't know if I will ever be brave enough to enter Deben. Although it have to be nice sailing there. There is one thing I would like to point very politely - drones should not fly in 50 meters proximity of people, according to CAA dronecode. I really don't feel safe when drone flies over my or my child head.

Many people see the positive side of Drones and my video was intended to help. There are many things that are dangerous in life and I suspect you carry out some of them. There is a lot of hysteria regarding drones and many things are far far more dangerous....... Like boating. Drones have and do save lives. Not heard of anyone killed or injured by one yet...... I think we need to keep things in perspective and also real.

Glad you enjoyed the videos but I must say that some peoples attitudes make me wonder why I bother. It takes a lot of time and effort and indeed cost.... But Hey Ho

Hey,
I absolutely appreciate the effort. And I am really trying to be as polite as possible. Drones are new thing and cause a lot of confusion. Its first time (ok second, once I left a comment on youtube), and I only pointed this that I really hope that I will not be recognized as evil or so. I am just trying to spread the word, as many people are not aware its an actually a law (hard to enforce) - with separation, flying altitude etc, I am just stating my concern. I am not hysterical, just very cautious. And its very unlikely that drone will cause damage to person (or kill one), but its possibility and lot of people treat them like toys. I understand comments about other dangerous things, but its also about choice. I know risks of boating and been doing far more extreme things in the past, like alpine climbing, but when drone is over my had, I have nothing to say.

On the bright side, I wish to have drone footage of me sailing, and drone is on my buy list. I think its excellent technology that could open absolutely new ways of rescue (like in mountains), and incredible footages like the first full ski decent from K2 - it could be not possible if drone operator would not be in radio contact with skier.

Drones, only a little better than jet skies................ both bloody annoying if you're not the one playing!!

This Thread is about the Deben Bar. If you have a particular opinion about Drones or Jet Skis perhaps you should start your own thread elsewhere

Is there a speed limit on the river?

Yes like most rivers between certain months there is a limit but outside of these months it is lifted. Also there is a very large area where you can fill your boots at all times of the year.
