Dearest marina for overnight stay?

Please Please Please never mention how much it really costs to run our boats, SWIMBO occasionally reads this forum and if she ever found out how much it really costs she would have a fit!!

And if you are reading this dear of course the new stainless anchor was only a fiver at the boat jumble ;-)

Dart Marina

is more expensive than dart haven, and imho the harbour master's a bit of a twat...

Re: 12k Running Costs..........

For Targa 30

£5,000 (£100,000 * 5% - Loan/opportunity cost)
£3,000 mooring
£500 Insurance
£2,000 Engine and leg servicing
£500 antifoul
£250 winterising
£250 lifts
£500 repairs

Above excludes fuel, depreciation and trips to the chandlers.

Phantom 38 or similar I reckon on £24,000

You should worry. My SHMBO was paying the bills last night.
The Marina bill, lift out, Insurance and new upholstery bills had all arived within the week. About five and a half grand's worth. And she says she hates boats!!

Have you sent off Your Stamped. SAE and cheque. Yet.

Over the Top

Thats a bit over the top for a 40 footer. On the same basis, mine costs about £17.5k pa not including the dreaded D word which, with a new boat could easily double the costs for the first 2 years
It all sounds horrendous but compare it to running an expensive car. Buy a new 740i, do 20,000m pa in it @ 100p per mile or similar (What Car rate) and thats a total running cost of £40k for 2 years, including depreciation of course
Boating does'nt sound so expensive now, does it?

Thats not the point. I dont mind paying £7 for a lunch stop but I do mind having to pay the overnight rate for a lunch stop, about £30 all in
What you should be asking is why it costs £3000 to moor a 30 footer for a year in the Solent when it costs less than half that in N France or Holland. It doesnt matter whether you earn £10k or £10m per year, a rip-off is still a rip-off

Re: Pathetically cheap!

I took a 52 footer into Atlantis Marina in the Bahamas last year and it cost £178 (US$250) per night, plus electricity and water! Mind you, the facilities were pretty special.

Dont include cost of your own capital imho

If you have a 100k pile od cash, not sensible to include opportunity cost of 100k @ 5% or whatever, imho. Your capital is yours, you dont have to rent it off something else. Putting it another way, ANYTHING you spend the £100k on is, on this maths, gonna cost you £5000pa opportunity cost. Therefore everything costs you that, it's not relevant to the debate on how to tspend the money. The only way to avoid incurring this £5k opportunity cost is to put the £££ in bank and then die.

24k for p38 way too much imho. Our p42 is 12k pa tops, all professionally serviced no DIY.

Re: special rate for journalists

Peak-season holiday rates when we were there were $4.95 per foot per night ($257.40 for a 52-footer). Either way, it sure made the Editor's eyes water when I put in my exes).

And the golf-cart thing is just the typical American why-walk-100-yards-when-you-can-drive-it-instead...the marina staff come from the marina office to your berth in these carts, take your lines, wait for a $10 tip, and then go away again.
