Went to Lymington by boat on Friday night and stayed in Berthon Marina. Initially intended to stay 2 night untill we went to pay - 35ft boat, £28 something plus electricity, what a rip off.

salterns, Dart haven, St Jean Cap Ferrat

salterns was noted by some as the most expensive. Darthaven works out same or more £££ cos you have to pay river dues on top. St Jean Cap Ferrat in France was £60 for a 15m berth two years ago, and it's a bit of a dump imho.

Sadly, I think you'll find the same sort of charges at Lymington Yacht Haven (the other one), Cowes Yacht Haven and Beaulieu although my personal nomination for Marina rip-off does go to Beaulieu for trying to charge a full overnight rate just for a lunch time stop. We didnt stop either

You surprise me Mike.

I am a fan of Beaulieu, and have stayed both overnight and just over lunch. I forget the exact amount of the lunchtime only, but it was around £5 +/- 1.

I dont think I'll bother going to England with my boat as in France I can stay on a visitors pontoon overnight for free inc use of electric and o/night in marina for a tenner.

Hm, our marina is $2/ft/night, incl 50A power/water/TV/phone/pool/sauna/jacuzzi/showers. You won't find much in US for less than about $1.25/ft/night, in case anyone is thinking of coming this way:)

Re: Ah yes but

There's some market forces here though. E Cowes is bound to be massively cheaper than Lymington (esp Berthon, as it's in town) because it's a bit of a dump. You can buy a whole marina in E Cowes with PP for 50 houses for much less than £3m, whereas Berthon's site in Lym is worth massively more than that, and you gotta pay them a decent return else they might as well sellit and build flats or whatever. So imho it's not fair to criticise them for overcharging, just vote with your keel :)

Re: okay then £4m

But would lymington give planning permission for the flats? They may want to preserve the feel of Lymington with er massive Berthon sheds and derelict car park, which blends nicely with the train station and hooting ferry terminal on the opposite bank.

Power of planning permission

Fair point. I assume from evidence of the street scene that provided made of corrugated pre fab steel sheets painted battleship grey, and located prominently, you can get pp for anything in Lym. Actually, they have just finished large apartment block behand the ferry terminal (ie just East of it), facing across the water back towards Lymington - admittedly that's the "wrong side of the tracks" (ooer, literally on this occasion)

Praps new policy when cruising. If suspect overcharging, ask in marina office for copy pp for flats. If they produce fully approved architect drawings, tell em "ok I understand, market forces, banged-to-rights, here's £135 overnight for my 8m boat". If they dont produce, tell em rip off and walk out in strop headed for E cowes.

Re: Ah yes but

I rather expect Berthon thought of turning their place into a 'marina village' yonks ago. That piece of grass behind the car park where all the dogs crap is crying out for a bijou 10 storey condo block at about £1m a throw. Its got to be far easier money than mending boats only I expect the council wont play ball on the PP even if the whole planning comittee get free berths for life
Who is Berthon anyway? Whats the history to the name?

I like Beaulieu as well and have moored there overnight and for lunch many times but the last time we went, back in September I think, they were adamant that they had to charge the overnight rate for a lunch time stop

\"H\" marked in the grass

That peice of dog-becrapped grass is actually marketed in the Berthon brochure as a helicopter landing space, twin engines only they say, so must have some permission

Berthon is family owned. Never pulled the co house file, but apparently family owned, 2 brothers mostly involved AFAIK, Something May and Brian May (not the Bohemian Rhapsody one, I think).

Mr Ault sounds like another person with too much time on his hands engaging in that peculiar English pastime of being a busybody

We visited Beaulieu the other Thursday after getting very wet battling a F8/9 trying to get to the Hamble.
We paid for an overnight stop (£20). Having used the showers plugged in the electric blow heater to dry the boat out and had a late lunch we decided to try for the Hamble. The Beaulieu marina happily refunded the difference between the overnight fee and the shot stop fee (£5).
They even lent us a shore power lead and did not want a deposit. (We could not find ours!)

Re: Dont stop at Lowerstoft fish dock

I stopped there to recover after a hard night run ,they charged me £22.50 for a 28 foot boat .
What did I get for that sweet fxxx all .
I thought I would keep my old tub out of the posh side so went into the old fish dock ,moored up to shixx old quay side and got pestered by jobs worth !!!!! as soon as I emerged to stretch my legs.

When I went across to get diesel the very nice fella told me if I went in the club side it would have cost £16.00 and hot showers !!!!!!

The three or four times I stopped at Beaulieu I only paid about £7. Surely these charges aren't high considering the £12k per year that it costs to run a 30 footer?

This reminds me of a guy I saw refusing to pay £7 to stop for lunch at Cowes Yacht Haven in his £100k Sealine. Problem is that your friends just realise what a tightarse you are.
