One reason for having the AP on, you get disoriantated. looking at all the insuments and trying to steer, with the waves sending you in different directions. With it on, you can concentrate on looking out to sea, the radar or chart plotter.

Exactly houghn depends on the conditions, direction of waves, etc One takes the actions appropriate at the time

This is all good stuff. It's interesting to see all the different and common approaches adopted by folk. This would be an informative thread for some newbies.
