Hi YBW,

An enjoyable sail on the Solent this weekend was unfortunately cut short by a seized engine and a tow home from a very kind passer-by.

It turns out that I have (a lot of) water in the oil and what seems like a stuck injector obstructing the cylinder of my Volvo Penta MD11C (circa 1979).

A full re-build is apparently needed and the recommendation has been to buy a new (refurbished) engine.

Are there any owners (or previous owners) of MD11C's out there who might be able to recommend a suitable replacement for this engine?

Many thanks in advance!

Alex W.

Having rebuilt a couple of MD11Cs 20+ years ago, some parts were hard to come by then and expensive. From what you say, I would suspect a dropped valve, not an injector and think it's time for a new engine. Bearing in mind the age of these engines, I wouldn't replace with similar used one, Beta should have one which fits. Old one should be worth some money for spares if you strip it.

Going through exactly the same with my MD2B - although I have diesel (I think) in my oil

Have ordered a Beta 30

Oh dear......... Looks like you have the invisible hole problem in a liner. A hole can develop down opposite the drain cock. This allows water into the engine. one owner in our marina filled his engine with water 4 times before I showed him the problem. Job was done on the pontoon and only required the removal of the heads and blocks . In his case only one liner had a hole but the other was turned in the block so it would last longer. Only parts used were liner piston rings and set of gaskets. Engine is probably still running.

Another pensioner boater in Victoria BC was quoted $10,000 for a new engine. $500 dollars and 3 months later sailed to to Hawaii.

These engines will put up with a lot and the lower end is probably fine and maybe only one cylinder is affected however I would recomend rotating the other liner in the block if not holed. It will need new seal rings.

I would suggest having a look and seeing if the problem is just a seized piston in one liner. You then have the choice.

Parts are available.
