Dead Hudl!

Fed up of my Huddl 2, battery life is not good, it keeps freezing and needs to be reset. Won't switch on after a few days of shutdown, and it had the problem the op is describing. We never use it now, it's in the same draw as the huddl 1.

I've had this with a couple of tablets,. It turned out the power socket was worn and didn't allow charge. Fixed each by distorting connection with screw driver

Argos are still selling 10" Lenovo tablets from £84.95. The cheapest ones are running Android 4.2 but for just over £100 you can get 5.0. I have one on the boat and whilst it might not be the fastest in the World, it's perfectly usable and i'd say a bargain. Add the Marine Navigator app and VMH charts and it's a cheap 10" chart plotter.
Many thanks for the help. The boat tablet, which mimics the plotter, is a 10" Lenovo. It's great but I want one which is a little more portable.

I've changed the USB socket board.

You HAVE changed the charger and/or charging lead ? (I know it's obvious, but .......)

I've had more trouble with micro-usb cables than anything else! The little USB power monitors (a couple of £ from China) are very useful

Edit: The Hudl2 DOES need to see the green+white USB wires shorted before it will charge. This would normally be in the charger.

A good friend has just received his third replacement iPad since Christmas! Only good news is that his wife found he had lost pictures of their holiday cruise and is not talking to him. I won't be going down that route!

I have had every iPhone, 2 Mac's, a Macbook Pro and Four iPads over the years, and had only one HDD failure on the Macbook Pro. I must be lucky ;-)

If anyone is old enough to remember the Dakota DC3, at one time there were so any flying that every air crash seemed to be a Dakota. Same with hudls. So many that by the law of averages you'll get lots of failures. My wife's Hudl1 is still going fine.

I think Apple owners don't like to report failures........spoils the myth! :)

They are still fetching more 'used' than we paid for ours! (and not using Tesco vouchers). I brand-new sealed one will set you back £145 on Ebay.

Just wish it had a 'fast boot up' - especially after Lollipop with the encryption- and that you could get rid of that infuriating loud jingle on start-up! (anyone know how???).

Well, with 2 ipads and on average 6 iphones operational in my family, I can only report that apart from occasional impact damage which is common to every make, just one malfunctioning home button that was replaced on the spot at the Apple store. However, the one Hudl2 which is also the youngest device, has presented charging problems, screen problems and is currently refusing point blank to connect to the wifi - I suspect it may soon suffer from terminal impact problems. ;) So, sorry, no mythbusters here...

Your hudl obviously has standards & would rather go belly up, than live with an apple obsessed zealot wearing blinkers.

If you want a good quality and relatively cheap tablet with good manufacturer support... get a Kindle Fire. Just make sure the app you want is in the Amazon store or that you have another way of getting it on to the device...

My wife bought me a Kindle fire on the advice of several of her patients. It was well made and performed some functions well but could not run my already bought Navionics so I swapped it. I now have a Samsung.
Apple products seem to be no more or less reliable than any other brand. Two. Of my friend s have had to have desktops and laptops repaired. My venerable dell desktop seems to go on for ever (probably done for now) and my non apple laptop trundles on after 6 years use.

The big (and only?) redeeming feature of the (original) Kindle that I can see is that the screen is reflective and can be read in bright sunlight. (albeit in monochrome).

Why-O-Why does someone not produce an android tablet with a similar screen?

I reported my failure. You need to go to Specsavers, or perhaps your non-Apple screen has so many dead pixels you missed that...

Incidentally, when I want to update my Apple products, the old ones have a very very good residual value, so there is a really sensible case for the financial benefits too. :encouragement:
