De-humidifiers

Met a guy last week (Marine Engineer) who said De-Humidifiers were bad news on boats as they will 'pull' moisture/water ? through the hull which will eventually lead to the dreaded 'O' word. What do ya think , or was this a superb wind up.

If that were true, would'nt there also be a constant migration of moisture from the water surrounding the boat through the hull?

I guess a dehumidifyer brings the humidity level to that experienced in the summer. So at that time we should introduce water into the cabin to reduce the effect??. The water slopping around the bilges is therefore doing a good job ??

Water comes through the hull anyway (microscopic level) Using a dehumidifier won't have any effect on this at all.

Sounds like a little bit of knowledge being dangerous!

I have heard of an owner who suffered from his cherry woodwork drying out because his dehumidifier was set too high.

I leave mine on about 2/3 and over the past 4/6 w/e the humidity has been between 55/70% in min 5c/16c temp range.

I reckon this is fine. Boat feels dry with no odour.

All I can say is, if there is any truth to it then we have got something else to worry ourselves about. As if there is'nt enough allready !!!

If you were to push me for an opinion I would say that it sounds very unlikely as surely a dehu. can only extract moisture that is currently in the atmosphere not import it through a material.

I have heard this before, the guy went to a boat in another marina and the owner had the heating on full and a de-humidifiers running, it was a standard charge for electric, and in his option the de-humidifier was pulling water up throught the hull.

I cant remeber if it had caused any damage, but he did advise me to be careful about over doing it
