I want to upgrade my DSC radio which I bought about eighteen months ago. The radio works fine but I want a better quality one.

If I offer it for sale is it possible to change the stored DSC number from mine to whoever buys it without sending it back to the manufacturer and it costing a fortune?

if You are referring to Your MMSI number, this one is NOT (and CANNOT be built into the radio equipment, but is given to You by the local authority managing the Gmdss system.
Thus either You ar the dealer shuold be able to erase the MMSI number when you sell the radio and reprogram it into the new radio.

Simple answer is probably not - some manufacturers will "allow" certain agents access to the codes, but it will depend on the make. I do have contacts who can do such changes, but they will charge.

You can expect to pay around £100 to send it back "to base" for reprogramming.

If it is a Silva this will work - sent to me by Silva

that's usefull Bob

my Icom allows 2 entries which would creae a bit of a dilema on sale as I would of course be tempted to use the second to simply replace mine with 00000000.

another aproach is agree with whoever you by your new one that thye will delete your old one for you - but this still leaves the new purchaser a possible issue programming the new number in

it would be interesting to hear Icom's wider take on this; and how much they, for example, would charge?

£100 sounds 'uneconomical' from the perspective of a second hand unit for all but the very top of the range!

P'raps too useful to those that only come out on dark nights..........

Having read some of the complaints about the Silva S15 last year, p'raps some people that own one might prefer it to be nicked so they can claim the insurance and buy something that works..... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I bought a second hand Simrad DSC radio via ebay & Simrad & agent both quoted £25 flat rate charge to re- program with my MMSI, but happily, vendor kindly persuaded Simrad to do it FoC, having taken the set to them
