DC motor for ancient Simpson Lawrence windlass?

Take it to a local motor rewinder and see if they can clean it up and replace the bearings.

I had the same issue with a rusty perkins 4/236 starter motor and a local company repaired the original allot cheaper than a replacement.

Have you tried talking to John McMaster at SL Spares (www.slspares.co.uk)?

I have an old SL windlass and he does not have spares for the older models, but you never know.

As others have said, they can be rewound and refurbished.

I have a Seawolf with a completely gubbed motor (mostly ally dust)

SL Spares do a replacement with a different case as the motor is slightly bigger, and it is over £400. A friend is having a go at refurbishing mine, but again it is finding the right motor that is the problem.

Thank you for your replies! I managed to dissasemble the motor and went to the rewinding shop yesterday. I will soon know its condition and if it can be repaired in the case it does'nt work already. For sure it needs a lot of care, lubrication and brushes.
