Never been, but Robin of this parish axshully lives there! Cor, it's sounds dead exciting and yerknow, American cars zooming about, all that. I am hoping he'll give us some nice links, and possibly a reality check. Or maybe it's even more fab than it sounds?

Went there a few years ago, drove on to the beach and noticed a cop car in the distance was pointing towards us. Turned out there was a strictly enforced speed limit was on the beach! They nearly got me!

The original racing was on the beach but the track now is a mile or two inland eastwards up International Speedway Boulevard and close to the airport. IT is curretly being revamped as a multi million dollar upgrade with better more weather protected grandstands etc.

THE Locals all drive to work like they are on the track qualifying, :disgust: ( not me of course!)

I'm not terribly impressed with this kind of racing as it for me isn't at all like the real thing in F1, just a bunch of curs with big engines, go fast stripes, no silencers (mufflers) and drivers with girt great egos and far less skill. Of course I could be wrong as there is a huge fan following.

Something I wasn't aware of until recently is that this is where Campbell broke the land speed record with bluebird, on the beach not the track, and his car is now on display in the museum at the stadium.

Driving on the beach is a contentious issue locally as a few accidents and injuries have occurred. we can walk to the beach in under 10 minutes but don't although we occasionally take a dawn exercise stroll over the ICW bridge before it gets too hot/humid . We actually live overlooking the Intracoastal waterway just above or north of 'Seabreeze' Bridge or Mason avenue/Seabreeze boulevard our boat is 10 minutes drive south in Halifax Harbor Marina Daytona beach which is a well protected marina actually owned by the City but operated by marinas International.

Are you coming this way TCM?? THere is a popular north/south passage anchorage on the ditch in front of where we live that is ideal for cats as in lots of the SE , bahamas, keys and ICW ditch the waters in the channels are somewhat 'skinny'. we draw 5.5ft with a wing keel which is OK, but our last boat in England had 7ft draught and would be a serious problem.

It's kinda boring by boat, though. Just an anonymous stop on the ICW. The municipal marina is pleasant enough, somewhere to recover after the struggle through the really shallow spot opposite Ponce Inlet.

Try and be there for Biketoberfest – October 16-19, 2014

More tats, Harleys and beer than is normal.

It is quite an experience.

Bike Week is better IMo , March 6th to march 15th in 2015. http://www.daytonachamber.com/daytonabikeweek/search.cfm

It is a bit intimidating to be driving in amongst hordes of big bikes and trikes but then driving in Florida is intimidating anyway! Tanned bare tummed totty on big throbbing Harleys and very arty painted custom bikes:encouragement:

Thanks for this Robin! It's mainly that daytona Beach sounds so groovy, much more so than other people's locations (sorry everytbody else, ahem) ... anyway I am due to do a US mo'bike tour, and currently wondering about whether to ship a bike from the carib to US or buy another one there and so on, so either way mite easily get to DB. Do they call it DB? I bet they do, very trendy. Well, if they don't you could start anyway.

Some have DB on their cars like we had GB back home then there is NSB for New Smyrna Beach or OB for Ormond Beach. you can rent Harleys here too, quite a few rent one way here and return them up the coast about 70 miles at St Augustine (which is the oldest city in the USA BTW)

You will need to grow or maybe aquire an add-on hairpiece ponytail tied up with rubber bands and even a second one on a skinny goatee beard as well to blend in fully, plus a full set of body tatoos is a must have of course.

BTW last time we saw you, and then not to talk to, you were on the big mobo (I forget the name of it now) and it was tied up on St Peter Port outer visitor pontoons and I guess your son was riding around it in a small RIB?

Most of the big bikes arrive for the bike weeks on trailers, in the back of pick-ups or in horse boxes, U-Haul vans or similar, very far other than the more local ones coming from in-State. Bike week is a really big deal and folks come from all round the world for it, we met some guys from Holland last year in the main post office who were mailing complete custom bike frames back home that they had bought from one of the exhibitors

And a tee shirt that says on the back "If you can read this, the bitch fell off"

Ah-the Ponce Inlet.

IIRC the historical note on the S side of the beach tells of the Spaniard Ponce de Leon cutting the throats of the 150 or so unfortunate french mariners who landed here in the 16th or 17 centuries.

Sounds like he was a nice bloke......................................

his descenants are still around only now they carry 10mm Glocks or even AK47s:eek:

Intimidating bikers? Most of 'em are lawyers who've brought their hogs down from somewhere colder in the back of a van. On their bikes they're so ruff'n'tuff they seem to think think lane-splitting is a capital offence (which gives them all the disadvantages of cars, but without the air-con).
