Ive been doing the DS theory online now over a few weeks, and have been quite impressed with the course content and structure, I decided to do the exam/assessment section today in the classroom with David at 5 Star Marine, he also was my examiner during the process ringing me up to check all was ok when I got a few things amiss (I blame the fat pencil tip for slightly off coordinates:)) and answering any questions I had along the way so credit where it is due, all very helpful.

FWIW, I can recommend the course for those wanting to do/learn something at home over these coming winter months if you cant get your boating fix.

I virtually did mine on-line ! I went to the evening classes and the tutoring was that poor, I then had to research everything on the web or reference books.
My passing was not a credit to the teaching...

i am thinking of doing this course at home, do i need to buy it off a training school and will they then keep an eye on what i am doing etc etc

how long can you take to complete it and how do you do the exam at the end of it, online or in a classroom ?????

if you were to fail the exam can you resit until you pass or do you have to pay again

cheers shawn

Hi Shawn, you can buy it direct from navathome.com or via a training school, I went via 5 star marine as had used David (solitaire on here) before. At the end of each section some answers get submitted to the training school where they are viewed by the examiner who should get in contact with you if he/she notices anything you may be struggling with or even just to say well done and keep it up. You can also phone or email any questions you are not sure on.

You can then choose at the end to do the exam/assessment online or in the classroom. If you are worried about failing I would recommend doing the classroom exam at least then you could possibly chat to your examiner about anything you are unsure of before you start the exam. The exam itself doesn't take very long and is in 2 parts.

Hope this helps.
Matt

To get the qualification it needs to be done via a recognised RYA centre. There is no time limit, but it should be the aim to complete within 6 months. The exam can be taken online or, as Matt did in the classroom. If the exam is invigilated it can be used towards commercial endorsement.

There is a small charge for a resit, but if you work together with the instructor it should not be an issue. Most problems occur when students don't read the question correctly or get the basics right but get some of the elementary maths a bit wrong!

"If the exam is invigilated it can be used towards commercial endorsement."

Since when does the shorebased theory, count towards a "commercial endorsement"? That only applies to appropriate practical courses.

The Day Skipper can be commercially endorsed, but the holder should be in possession of the shore based certificate. While the assessments can be done online, the regulations state that if at any stage the holder wishes to use it as part of the commercial endorsement procedure then it needs to be invigilated.

Day Skipper can be commercially endorsed without having gone through a certificate of competence exam.

It is part of the T&C' outlined part of the online course recognition for centres.

can you post the appropriate RYA blurb regarding that pls.

You can get a commercial endorsement for Cat 5 waters ( 20 miles from a nominated port in daylight & favourable weather) if you have satisfactorally completed both the Day Skipper practical course and the Day Skipper Shore based course. the on

From the RYA http://www.rya.org.uk/coursestraining/professional/commercialend/pages/commercialendorsements.aspx

"Which certificates can be commercially endorsed?

The following certificates can receive the standard commercial endorsement:

I) Course completion certificate:
RYA National Powerboat Certificate - Level 2
RYA National Powerboat Certificate - Advanced (only if issued before January 1, 2005)
RYA Day Skipper (tidal) practical course completion certificate.
RYA Day Skipper (non-tidal) practical course completion certificate, only if supported by a Day Skipper shorebased course completion certificate.

II) Certificate of competence (exam passed):
RYA Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence
RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence
RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence
RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence
In addition, the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean Certificates of Competence can receive the STCW endorsement. "

There seems to be quite a bit of interest in online courses and in my experience they're great - it was the flexibility that drew me and the fact that I could go faster over bits that I knew and slower over other bits. Perfect for me and a busy diary although I guess that this type of learning isn't for everyone.

After a great deal of shopping around and looking at different courses I opted for a Navathome Course through First Sail Training - best value and they were recommended by a friend.

They didn't disappoint - I did my RYA Day Skipper Theory Online and liked the course, the instructor support and service that I got so I continued straight on to do my RYA Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster Shorebased with them too.

The exams are all done on line and after a bit of diligence, contrary to some of the chat here, they are fine for commercial endorsement - you only need to have them invigilated if you're looking to do the MCA Master 200 or OOW 500 qualifications.

I hope my tuppence worth is of interest!
