Daylight Saving

My recollection of peoples feelings is obviously different to yours.

What I disliked about it was that for quite a spell in mid winter it was not only dark when I left home in the mornings but still dark when I got to work and then it was dark or just about getting dark when I left work again in the evenings
So both journeys in the dark.

After three winters of that I was quite pleased when we returned to the GMT/BST system

At least with GMT during the winter even though it was dark by going home time a good bit of my morning journey was in daylight, in fact all of it apart from a spell in mid winter.

I do not much like getting up in the dark and even less leaving home in the dark in the mornings.

In truth makes no odds to me now. The sun is well up in the sky and shining in the bedroom window by the time I wake up! :)
+1 again! I, too now, can await the sun to be well up, but not when I have to catch the tide. Can't those useless M.P's do something about that??

I see your point Vic, but from my point of view I remember the long warm evenings in the pub garden where it was still broad daylight at chucking out time.

Yes but you still can enjoy That with BST in operation during the summer.
I am not against BST in the summer ... just dont want it in the winter as well!

You dont get long warm evenings in the winter whatever you do with the clocks.

I am with the view of VicS, though I found it strange to see that he is in Kent. I thought it was only those of us in the north and west that were opposed to advancing the clock. For what it is worth, I thought that the trial in 1968-71 was a good idea and the change worked for me personally. It did mean that in January the sun did not get over the eastern hill until after 10am and it was pitch dark as I left for work at 7.30 but at least there was still a glimmer of daylight as I came home at 17:30. It is not well known however that, while the accident rate in most of the country fell during the experiment, it actually rose in the Western Isles. Now I am retired, I can get up an hour earlier if I want to but strangely enough neither spirit nor flesh is willing. I find eating my breakfast long before the eastern sky has started to lighten is too depressing.

The Norway and Sweden time zone is irrelevant. They are well to the east of us. What I find really strange is that while Portugal shates GMT with us, Spain which is west of most of the UK does not. Time zones are an inevitable feature of any country or continent that has an east-west extent of more that 15 degrees but the locations of the divisions defy belief sometimes.

Finally, as the problems arise in the mornings and the benefits in the evenings, it is the date of latest sunrise that should be central to any clock shifting. That date is (by my estimation) December 28 or 29. The present period of "winter" time is too long. It should be cut to about 8 weeks either side of the above date.

That means we keep the present system ??

Thank god for that!!

Some of us can remember when we kept "BST" throughout the winter for a trial period in the early 1970s.

It was a failure and disliked then.. why should things be any different 40 years on?

You want to get up an hour earlier? ... Set your fecking alarm clock an hour earlier and leave me in bed.

I'm with VicS on this one. Or how about we move by 30 minutes and europe does the same?

Maybe because people lead totally different lives now compared to 40 years ago? If everyone had that attitude then we'd all be living in caves still.

What are the relevant changes in lifestyle in the past 40 years that might this more acceptable now than it was then.

I cant see that the cave I live in now compared with the cave I lived in 40 years ago makes much difference either.

Sorry You're all wrong and the Bill should have got through but for daft old farts who used parliamentary etiquette to talk it out.

No argument.

End of thread.

I'm not a scientist. Is that balls?

That's not science .... thats schoolboy maths.

"Eight thirds pi R cubed" is a useful expression you can always use in mixed company or on forums where ******** would get clobbered by the swear filter.

I did I ever mention the forum I used briefly that would not allow the word "specialist"

I think it is reasonable to say that work patterns have changed over the last forty years.

To find work, people are often having to travel much further now . This increases the commute times. Also, many are having to work longer hours for a variety of reasons. This certainly applied to me. It is difficult to change hours of work if you work for someone.

Personal view of course, but I am more in favour of having +2 GMT for say 9 months of the year.

There is more chance to play with your children in the park, play nine holes of golf or make it worthwhile to have an evening bash on the boat. Weekends, if you don't have to work, don't matter much. Often weekdays provide a better chance for reasonable weather being that there are five of them.

Again, a personal and probably cynical view is that the northern tribes of the UK Scotland are suffering from a lust for power from a few individuals rather than making much of difference in their quality of life. The southern tribes are also suffering from the same thing with a few individuals trying desperately to hang on to power. Both of us being the losers, hence the recent farce in so called democracy. Expect this to go on for some time.

If there is a genuine spiritual feeling among the people that they would be better off breaking away they have every right to do so and I am sure we would wish them well.

One of the reasons I am very much in favour of being on CET is based on the south coast (using Gosport as a reference) the sun sets at 21:22 on mid summers day. In contrast the further north you are the later the sun sets and in Thurso the same evening the sun sets at 22:27 an hour and five minutes later.

As a general rule most people waste the early morning daylight, but in the evening can use the additional daylight for hobbies and pastimes.

Most of us are governed by working hours so can not start work at say 8 am and finish at 4pm to gain that extra hour on the water in the evening.

Old Troll

Scotland at present is the best governed country , region , council or whatever body you wish to name in the Uk by far. The SNP are making a good and fair go of governing the northern tribal lands , more than can be said for the scunners in thon big hoose on the Thames. That why we can do better on our own in the future. Nothing to do with anti-english or nationalism, seperatism or what else.
Just better goverment, thats all.
