Day Skipper Vs ICC

Surely it is obvious and simple.

If you need the training and to learn about the theory and the practice, then you do the RYA Day Skipper course. And ask for the International Certificate too.

If you have done the theory and already have the practical ability, Just get assessed and get the International Certificate.

Just an extra point to my last post.

Don't assume an Assessment will be easy.

I have read here of slip-sod ones. Mine was NOT.
I did it on my own boat, single handed as that is how I usually sail.
It was thorough, professional, difficult, a I was pretty shattered when it was completed.

Sorry, missing the point (maybe I wasn't clear).

I was talking about the joint "DS and ICC" service that some schools apparently do for a tenner on top of the DS price and which, for some reason, "capnsensible" considers a rip-off. He described how easy it was for the school to do the ICC part of the paperwork, presumably implying that the £10 is a rip-off for so little work. I was asking who (if anyone) pays the £40 in this combined case.

(To avoid confusion, let's ignore the case of RYA members who get it for free. I doubt that many people doing Day Skipper courses will be members in any case.)

You really are missing the point. There is no such thing as the combined Day Skipper/ICC. If you do the Day Skipper practical course and are issued with the certificate you are entitled to apply for the ICC on the back of it. There is no additional "test" or anything else required.

You can opt to do the ICC as a "course" over a number of days or via an assessment. In both cases the issue of the certificate of competence is just that. In itself the ICC is not an actual qualification so you could not for example "convert" it to an RYA Day Skipper certificate.

In answer to who becomes an RYA member - most do. The application form allows you to join the RYA at the same time and the certificate is issued free.

Yeah, was great actually! Am desperate to get back out there, although for now am limited to my RIB on the Thames :-(
