Test run engine today prior to relaunch tomorrow, now postponed. Had refitted thermostat this morning, what I thought was uneventful short task. Ran the engine taking cooling water from a water butt only to find the water leaking out at the thermostat housing. Take it off and discover that the o ring on the by-pass pipe to exhaust elbow had failed, preumably on refit as I checked it just before. This at the thermostat end. Does anyone know if it is possible to buy just the o ring or must one buy a kit? Thanks.

You can buy almost any O ring online - I use Seals'r'us. Measure it carefully (micrometer) for diameter and tube diameter as there is extensive choice of sizes! Use silicone grease to help it seat and avoid trapping.

Take the old one to a good engineering supplies. They should stock all sizes of O rings. Buy a spare as well. Shouldn't take long to fit

Thanks all. The old one is in two pieces and rather deformed. Keypart emailed me a VP drawing this morning so out of courtesy I ordered from them. Fingers crossed it will arrive tomorrow. Like all Volvo bits it seems v expensive for such a small item. No silicone grease on board som Amazon for that. One small item, such an impact. There is a lesson in this for me to be more careful and probably put the o ring on the pipe not on the hole.

Usually the size doesn't have to be an exact match anything about right will do. The thickness of the ring should be a reasonable fit in the slot. Either stretch it out a bit or scrunch it up a bit to fit.
I'm not a purist, obviously.

Possibly too late now, but accurately measure the new one and make a note so thatif you ever need a replacement you know what to order.
