Davit Broken - I Need Help

A delivery van caught my cast alluminium davit and sheared it off. The davit is a write off. I have been shopping around for a replacement without success. I would prefer a similar cast alluminium replacment because the fabricated stainless steel ones would look out of place on a narrow transom.

The boat was built circa 1982 and I assume the davits were fitted then. There is no manufacturer's name but there is a logo in the form of a sailing boat (could be SL with a line under and then CM) it is hard to decifer. The plate on the davits show the logo along with ' Safe Working Load 215 kg per pair' and what may be a part number '2516960'

I can email photographs of the plate and the davit if any one thinks they can help me find a replacement.

If this shoot in the dark is unsuccessful, I intend to explore the possibility of getting a new one cast. Has any one tried this or can offer advce?

SL and the rough date would almost certainly be Simpson & Lawrence, who went broke some time ago. Someone took over the designs, certainly for the Windlass stuff so you maybe luky!

A similar thing happened to me last year- but on the water. In the end, via an insurance claim I had to have a new pair - at vast expense to the third parties insurance.
It is indeed likely the original was a Simpson davit which are now being made by Cooney Marine. As with mine, anything made in the 80's is a problem, ie you cannot just get one the same, so it will have to be a pair.
If your insurance is paying, then get the best suitable replacement.
Cooney's number is 01538-484481 and speak to Sam Neal, in sales- very helpfull. He can e-mail you a list of all suitable davits, and you choose the nearest equivalent.
Good luck

Thanks Jim & Stuart.

I don't live far from Cooney Marine, so I paid Sam Neal a visit yesterday afternoon. They certainly have some nice stuff. However, my old cast davit is much lighter and less complicated. So I am still undecided on the way ahead. I would still like to find a replacment (second hand would be OK).

Stuart: did both your davits get broken or did one survive and if so where did it go?

John,
I have still got my old davits and am in the processes of having the bent one straightened out . However, I suspect they are far too big for your transom, as they were fitted to a motor cruiser, capable of lifting 250kg each, and with a big nine hole horizontal base plate. Have you looked on the "for sale" part of the forum, there are two there I have seen.
Will not your insurance pay for this?
Hope you get it resolved

Stuart; I agree your davits are too big.
It will be an insurance job but I had come to like my skill (acrobatic antics) of keeping the tension on the lifting lines, necessary to keep the lifting beams in position, while I climbed out of the dinghy. Well it is either the this or the major re-engineering necessary to accommodate the larger foot print of the new davits - built in cabinet and lining in the rear cabin will have to be removed.

ccscott49 - I will check out Vetus.

Parashandy - I did not receive your pm. My email may be playing up as I haven't received any messages, including spam, for 2 days. Could I ask you to try again and also send a copy to gibsonsj@logistics.org.uk.

Thank you all
John
