I put up a post a while ago, asking if anyone had heard of any cheap/free boats for restoration. I had a good response, and ended up having a look at a 2.5 ton Hillyard in Newhaven Marina. It was "offers in writing" but someone paid more than I was willing to, and so I am back on the hunt. I am considering a Dauntless. I like the look of them - sort of ugly and honest, a cartoon boat almost. I know a bit about them, but was hoping for more opinions: are they as slow as they look (I'm not too concerned - if I wanted to go fast I'd be on the ferry), what are they like to maintain (and possibly restore), and how seaworthy are they? I have heard mixed reports so far. Please comment! Thank you.

Yes, they are as slow as they look. But they take the ground very happily, and are comfy

"Condition varies" - this is a boat that will not withstand neglect. They are quite lightly built, using economical materials, and the centreplate is a structural issue in itself. So look at several.

You might also look at a few Kestrels, which sail ever so much better but have less room below. Same comments, generally.
