I will be in Greece a few times over the next few months and I'd like to get a pay as you go data only sim. They seem to be very expensive compared to what's available in the UK and Ireland [unlimited 1 month @ €20]. If anyone has any information or links for the best available deals I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Unlimited 1 month at twenty Euros is too much.....!?

Thats about what I pay in the UK for 20Gb, and that as far as I'm aware is pretty good.

Are you a freegan? :ambivalence:

We used Vodafone last year, it came with few hundred minutes for calls, quite a few gigabytes for social media and 8-9 gigabytes data. Only made a few calls so treated it as data only, 10 euro for 30 days.

Topping up online never worked but a visit to a Vodafone shop fixed that each time we tried it. I seem to remember getting some free data on online top-up and that kept us going until we were able to find a store.

I've no idea what a freegan is and no idea what the smiley means but I pay €20 for unlimited when I go to Ireland http://www.three.ie/eshop/phone-plans/prepay/ - note they regard 60GB as the threshold for fair usage.

Can you just buy a sim with this plan from any vodafone shop? I looked on the vodafone Greece website and it doesn't show anything like this plan. Thanks for your help.

Yes it was in their stores. Perhaps they discontinued it? I think it was called an international SIM pack or something similar.

EDIT:
My online account is still active from last year and says I was using "Vodafone International Prepaid Pack".
I remember it was a bit odd when I checked last year and online documentation said something about 500MB so we discounted it. Salesman in store said it was much more and I think it as 8GB but actually 9GB in first month. I can't remember what we go in 2nd month but it was at least 8GB. Online topup did not show that option but I think it does mention a free bonus on the 1st top up every month.

Having tried Wind & Vodafone we now use Cosmote ( the national carrier), prepaid monthly, which has the best coverage & is easy to top up online via PayPal. We pay for the months we’re in Greece and simply top up when we return.

Thanks. I know Cosmote has good coverage. Actually a lot of European tourists on holidays on the Aegean coast of Turkey manage to connect to it and get free roaming. Do you know what their data allowance is for pay as you go and how much it costs?

I'll be interested as well, in case Vodafone deal has gone. I seem to remember asking in a Cosmote store last year and was told to come back in 2-3 days as they'd run out of numbers to issue. I assume they meant SIMs but didn't follow up when told it would be 30 euro for 5GB (valid for 30 days).

I just use my UK EE sim. Data roaming charges were removed throughout the EU last July so I just continue to use my normal UK data allowance. Used it through last summer with no problems at all.
Prior to that I used wind and Vodafone. No problems with either except having to find a store to to up the data.
Unfortunately for me that's not an option as I'm with a Turkish provider. As I understand it all EU providers have fair use limits - in most cases your home data limits apply but for liveaboards for instance it's very likely if the use their phones more on roaming than on their home network their provider will impose a very low cap on them.

+1 for that. An advantage with using a UK sim and roaming, is that you are not limited a single operator. I spent the whole of last summer in Norway and never exceeded my UK limit (and that is with a fairly basic account) and always got a signal. although the operator varied. With the abolition of roaming charges there is much less need to get a local sim, and you keep your number.

I was using the Vodafone prepaid SIM for data last year in Greece. 10 Euros for 8GB and valid for 30 days.
In October they "upgraded" this to 10Euros for 5GB and valid for 25 days. My son works for Vodafone (not on the telecoms side) and he took it up with them to be told this is the way they are going across all of Europe and there is no likelihood of it being better in 2018

I bought a 3 sim to use as PAYG on a recent holiday to Aus and New Zealand. For £20 I got 13Gb data for a month. Why not get someone to buy a 3 sim in the UK and send it to you. In fact you can have mine as I dont need it ((I could bring it out but I will not be in Lefkas until end of March!). Although I surfed a lot I did not use a fraction of the 13Gb and could have got away with their lower. Only thing to be aware of is the sim cleverly stops you using your phone as a mobile hotspot so you cannot share you data

As I am with EE, I use my normal allowance when in Greece.

Thanks. I actually have an Irish sim and I'm going to try it next week when I'm there. I know I shouldn't listen to gossip but I'm told the main networks in the UK and Ireland are actively monitoring roaming patterns and closing down accounts where most of the usage is outside the home network. I have the same Irish sim for about 6 years but I only use it a few times a year and probably on average put about €30 on it in the year.

I use a three pay as you go data sim in Greece. Both myself and my wife could use it at the same time for 5 months in Greece and it was never blocked. As others said the big advantage is that it can be linked to the best signal/provider.

MY Irish sim is with 3 and I just had a look on the website to check the available PAYG plans. For €20 you get All You Can Eat AYCE data for a month [actually limited to 60GB in the small print] but that's only in Ireland. Data is limited to 6 GB roaming so unless I expect to be in Ireland in the same month it's probably cheaper to buy a local sim in Greece. I hope this link works http://www.three.ie/eShop/phone-plans/prepay/

Having had both Vodafone and Cosmote data sims in Greece we find the coverage of Cosmote to be better. We bought a Cosmote Mifi that gives us 5 Gb for 30 days for €30 but for several years now a summer bonus increases that to 10 Gb. We buy topups at kiosks.
