Looks like we might be arriving there fairly late tomorrow evening after a long passage. Any tips for finding a berth without too much hassle. Happy to anchor if that is easier.

In a normal year, raft alongside something biggish which looks unoccupied has always worked for me.

A call to the harbour office might be in order.

Pontoon with shore access on the port side past the river trip boats has visitors berths on the outside, or mid river pontoons on the starboard side again past the fuel barge, with visitors moorings either side.

There is also a pontoon earlier on the port side which the river trip boats use with shore access but needs to be vacated by 0800 hrs so the trip boats can move on to it.

Blue bouys up at Ditsham or anchor on the port side once past the RN base and large yellow bouys but before the rock and narrow bit on the way up to Ditsham.

Or you could just anchor in the river on the East of the big yellow mid stream buoys off the Town. Use plenty of chain as the holding is a bit poor.
And wind over tide causes the maypole dance effect. Dart wind blows either up or down rarely across and streams run fast. We often arrived at night and have anchored in small cove just to the east of entrance before. a Have also gone alongside the fuel barge, filling up as soon as they open but they got wise to that ruse eventually. :(

Agree with what others say although would avoid navigating up past Noss in the dark.

With winds forecast to be light and from the N with little swell, a personal favourite is Newfoundland Cove about 1km west of Mew Stone. It’s still neapy so - if free - you could anchor in the middle of the Cove in sand at a depth of around 4m LAT.

Oh, and if you do choose this option, the early morning sun turns it into one of the most romantically beautiful spots I have ever seen ?

The town pontoon has berths inside which may be full, but the outside is available after the ferries stop using it in the evening, can't remember the time, maybe seven pm, but you have to move on before maybe nine o/c.

Used to be no mooring on the outside until 1700 and was strictly enforced by the harbour authorities; off by 0900 or the tripper boats get upset.?

It's a few years since I was there, so thanks for the times. It has to be strictly enforced, but could still be the easiest place to hole up after a late arrival.
Inside the pontoon tends to fill up during the day but can be an enjoyable place to stay, once you have negotiated the odd charging system, with different sectors paying different rates for no very obvious reason. It can also be 'interesting' to come and go if the wind or tide are not co-operating. I have seen one professional skipper end up with his backstay jammed against the walkway.

We are indebted also to Pessimist and Pragmatist of this parish who allowed us to raft up to them in their then boat on a non walk ashore pontoon off KIngsmill, Delightful couple who at the time ran the local WiFi in the river too. We were there twice after night arrivals from Poole before heading off for Camaret and points south.
