took boat for good thrash this weekend on the humber. went out last night in strong winds and wind over tide to give boat a good shake down (first time used in anger so to speak.) the plan was to go to grimsby for a chinese. at @ 25knots going into waves port engine starts blowing out dark grey smoke. starboard engine fine no change. slowed down grey smoke diminished. turned around thinking I've got trouble better go back to marina.

grey smoke stops !!! - went and found some calmer waters near the humber bridge and speeded up again exhaust normal. took boat all the way to 34 kns more exhaust smoke than usual but now white. all the time temp and oil pressure all OK not burning any oil no funny noises. checked fuel consumption both engines seem about the same. came home today 20 miles at 25knts all is well , flat calm this morning. can anyone tell me what the grey smoke is about and have I got trouble brewing??? engines are 63Ps with @700 hours, well serviced but injectors not been refurbished since new.

smoking??

Have a look at your pre filters, would'nt mind betting there a good bit of muck in the offending one, probably stirred up by the choppy water.

You will always have smoke. (steam). In the waves, they will be slowing you down, causing over fueling.

It could be that the wind direction makes it appear to be just one engine.

The above answer is just as relevant. I'd also look at air filters, before going down the list, doing the least expencive first.
