ANOTHER YACHT SEAJACKED BY SOMALI PIRATES (ecop-marine)
On or about the 24. February 2010 a Danish Yacht was captured by pirates in the Southern Arabian Sea of the Indian Ocean.
The Danish foreign ministry confirmed and stated this publicly only today, which is why we could release the alert only just now, since it always has also to be ensured that the next of kin are informed first.
According to our information the attack happened in position 14N and 58E and the name of the Yacht is S/Y ING.
Four adults and three children aged 12, 14 and 16 are kept hostage.
The yacht is at present commandeered towards Somalia.
It is really hoped that the navies this time do not make the same mistakes as in the cases of SY TANIT AND SY QUEST.
According to our information also two other Danes from weapons-ship MV LEOPARD are still held hostage by a Somali pirate gang.
 
You've got to ask why anyone is sailing in those waters at the moment.

5. Pirates are attacking vessels, including yachts and recreational craft, in the gulf of aden, off the somali coast and in the indian ocean. Attacks have occurred over 1000 nautical miles away from somalia, off the coast of oman and in the arabian sea less than 200 miles from the coast of india. Attacks have also taken place off the kenyan and tanzanian coasts, southern red sea, seychelles, maldives, madagascar and an attack in the mozambique channel. These pirates are firing automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenades (rpg) in an attempt to board and hijack vessels. Once the attack is successful and the vessel hijacked, the pirates direct the vessel to the somali coast and thereafter demand ransom for the safe release of the vessel and crew. Pirates have increasingly used hijacked fishing vessels and merchant vessels to conduct piracy operations as mother vessels to sail far from the somali coast to attack and hijack passing vessels. Smaller skiffs are launched from the pirate mother vessel to attack the merchant vessels. Pirates are heavily armed with automatic weapons and rpgs.

6. Despite the increase in presence and effectiveness of naval forces in the region, as well as the effectiveness of defensive and protective measures, pirate activity has continued and commercial and civilian ships continue to be attacked and seized.

7. Transit by yachts and privately owned sailing vessels through high risk waters is extremely hazardous and may result in capture by pirates. Vessels that make this passage despite this warning should make contact in advance with the naval authorities. In addition, american citizens aboard should inform the nearest u.s. embassy or consulate of their plans to transit the area and/or update their information via the smart traveler enrollment program (step) on www.travel.state.gov. The coast guard advises that yachts and sailing vessels are particularly vulnerable to attack due to their low speed and low freeboard. The coast guard advises against all operation of or travel by yacht and pleasure craft on the high seas in the gulf of aden, arabian sea, somali basin and the western parts of the indian ocean. All yachts and sailing vessels intending to sail through high risk areas should reconsider the necessity of their travel and alternatives, such as transporting the vessel by yacht carrier. The coast guard further advises that participants in yacht races and rallies in these high risk areas are at great risk of attack. These events are often publicized and could draw attention from pirates, despite the security and safety measures that might be put in place. The coast guard strongly urges mariners not to participate in these events that will require transit through high risk waters. This is terrible and a nightmare I can't begin to imagine.

We had two children on board and were heading for Panama to join the BWR, but shipped home when the Chandlers were taken. Had we continued we would have now been in the Indian Ocean.

At the time I always wondered if I was making the wrong decision.

This is awful news to go with the tragedy of Quest.

I wish them a safe return.

I am not sure if shot first them ask question is the answer , but I do agree they something as to be done and they shouldn’t be left to hold the whole world to ransom, I remember writing some time back when the chandlers where taken , that it was a great shame the RN just stood back and did nothing ,maybe if they did we wouldn’t be where we are now , the feedback was then was ( that no one been killed and no one will as the pirates was only interested in getting they money ) well people have now been kill ,and more will if we just stand by and do nothing , it time some kind of action is taken when they are caught and we have to remember that plenty are caught and then released to go out and do it again .
Maybe once a few more oil tankers are taken someone will take it upon them self to sort out the mess till then we just have to hope no more lives are lost .
For now I just hope and pray that this family are release very soon and don’t have to go thought months or years of hell .

The trouble is -- in this case -- they are not widening their catchment area. If the reports are correct that they were 14N and 58E then this is exactly the area where vessels have been pirated for the last four years. Have a look at the ICC piracy maps for the last few years:

It brings a lump to my throat trying to imagine how that poor family and crew must be feeling now. How utterly and totally terrible.

We made the trip eastwards a year ago -- across from Oman to India. Even then we skirted the Omani coast until we were 20 degrees north and stayed in convoy until 60 degrees east before making a straight course towards Mumbai.

The trouble is that since last year the pirates have moved eastwards, still covering their favourite areas around the GoA, but now showing up closer than ever to the Indian coastline. Piracy is a big topic of conversation over here (India) in the media and in the yachting world.

The Seychelles have been out of bounds since 2009, but it is getting more and more likely that the Maldives will soon be completely off limits, leaving Jamie and me stranded in Cochin...

I'm with you, Jonic. I think anyone who desperately wants to head west should go round the cape or pay the exorbitant price of having the vessel shipped. We would not go back the same way we came now, even if we did hug the coast all the way along India, Pakistan and Oman. Too dangerous.

I hope it turns out well for that poor Danish family.

I hope the world does something about Somalia. The pirates need to be stopped at source, not out in the open seas.
 
What is the point of the tax being spent on ships with big and small guns if we don't use them?

Why are the Royal Navy so lily livered and scared of the pirates?
