Jimmy Green does a range of them from about £40 for a shortie. I was going to look at the next boat jumble, as they are normally there.

Try a netfloat, bamboo pole and plastic bag (flag).. that's more or less what some fishermen use!

DIY DAN BUOY

Fishing rod blank.
2 cans of Pringles
Aerosol can of 'crack filler' foam
Scrap lead.
Some yellow red or orange fabric.

Eat Pringles, knock bottom out of cans, tape together end to end, and line inside with cling film
Put fishing rod blank through cans and hold in centre of cans using some light line, approx one fifth of rod length from base.
Squirt foam into Pringles cans.
Allow to set.
Peel off cans.
Paint foam a nice colour.
Stick brightly coloured fabric to top of fishing rod
Tie a small bag to bottom of fishing rod and fill with scrap lead
Float the device, adding or removing lead until it sits upright.
Melt down the lead from the bag and pour into a mould (making a doughnut shape in wet sand is a good way of doing this, centre of doughnut should be same size as bottom of fishing rod)
Drill through lead and fishing rod and put a bolt through to hold together.

Call it £15 and two hours work.

Re: DIY DAN BUOY

Get a 2L drinks bottle eg C Cola, get a length of plastic conduit or water pipe, fit pipe down through drinks bottle so about 1/4 sticks through. Fill drinks bottle with expanding foam from canister. Fit stopper in bottom of conduit and fill with lead weight pieces. If you have a friend who has put those imitation diamond leading on his windows then he will have lots of left over bits. Alternatively some of those bench magnifiers have a bench stand full of lead balls. Anyway mix the first batch of lead with any waterproof glue, epoxy or silastic and pour in the top of the pipe. Add some red stuff (part of old ensign?) to the top of the pipe and give it a test run in your local boating lake. If it keels over add some more lead. When satisfied pour some more glue into the top of the pipe and Bob's your Uncle.......

Re: In the dark...
Just go along to your next boat jumble and buy one of those seawater batteries + light that is meant for a lifejacket. Older ones can be picked up quite cheap. You might need to lengthen the wire a bit. Tape the battery to the bottom end of the pipe and fix the light to the top end.

Simple
Of course if you actually use your home made Dan buoy you will have to change the battery for next time. Better make sure the storage location gives the battery some protection from the odd greeny....
