Has anyone replaced a damper drive plate on a Merry Fisher 635? Engine is Volvo Penta TAMD 22 PB and gearbox is Volvo HS 25A-A. I want to know if it can be done without removing the gearbox.

You have to remove the gearbox from the engine at the bell housing joint. The issue is whether there is enough room to slide the gearbox back to access the damper plate. This is determined by the amount of space aft of the coupling and clearance behind the prop. My guess is no and the normal way would be to either remove the gearbox from the boat or pull the engine forward. The former would seem the easier thing to do.

There is about 5 inches behind the coupling i was hoping to leave the bellhousing attached to the gearbox and slid both back

Is there also 5" clearance behind the prop - if you are leaving the shaft on? Does not leave much room to clear the shaft from the plate and more particularly to get in to undo the bolts and use a torque wrench to do them up again. Would guess this is not a common procedure so unlikely to find anybody who has actually done it.

I had to remove the bell housing with the gearbox. The gearbox face aperture in the bell was too small to get to the bolts on the outside rim of the drive plate. Critical distance is either the length of splined shaft to come out of the drive plate or space needed to get to the bolts onto the flywheel.
Not Volvo, mind.
