Damp in autohelm compass

Hi All,

Moisture has got into my autohelm compass on the flybridge and it is not giving a correct reading any more. It is linked to another below which still works well as does the whole system. The flybridge compass just seems to get stuck and I guess its probably done for, unless of course any of you know better? is there someone out there that can service or recondition this type of intrument? Its a 20 year old 701 Cetrek system.

Have you tried removing and putting in the airing cupboard, sometimes works.

Try switching the light on for a while, that gets rid of the condensation. ont fix whats broke tho

20 years old?

well, it's knackered, of course, and needs replacing. Boats and boating gear are like children. Once over ten years old (or even sooner) they are hopeless, and a total liabilty.

Sorry tcm, cant agree on that one, there are many boats and equipment around that are a lot older than that still going strong! it all depends on how well looked after things are and what the quality of manufacture was like in the first place. The autopilot unit is still very good and is a fantastic piece of engineering. You have to cut your cloth to suit your pocket! if you can afford boats and equipment which is under 10 years old, good luck to you!

Quite true, I have a sharp oceanpilot, autopilot, as old as the boat, 32 years, still going strong and it works perfectly. The great thing about it is, it is all transisitors etc, which can be repaired, I'll keep it. If it ever goes very, very, wrong, I will keep the hydraulic pump system, which is all repairable and replace the elctronics, they can be made to work with the old hydraulics. The price/reliabilty of the new systems for my boat are horrendous.
