On Sunday we went for a walk at Sonning as usual.

Between the lock and Bluecoat School rowing club there were 4 (5?) fishermen set-up with tents/umbrellas, trolleys full of food/beer/fishing gear.....out for a great day.

(Un)fortunately one of them drew my attention because he shouted at the lab for jumping in the river about 30yds from where he was just setting up and then got quite 'mouthy'. At the time there was something which made me feel that this wasnt the end of it.....and I was SO tempted to take photos of them......but didnt.

I've just been down there for a walk and the mess where they were is simply unacceptable. Spoke with the lockie.....and I'm not the first.....it's a disgrace.

The slob who we had the exchange with will be known to others: he was, mid-50's, looked 'ledd than intelligent' (re-confirmed by our exchange) 30+stone and looked barely able to waddle, never mind walk, with all his gear which included a case of 24 lagers. These are now in the black bin bag pictured below.

Where the other 3 (4?) were fishing, we now have a wonderful selection of food wrappers, cans, plastic bottles, cereal packets, food remains etc.

These wannakers managed to push trollies FULL of kit plus food/drink all the way there: why the F*** could they not take their $hiite away with them?

The Bull are checking their CCTV to see if they were captured walking past. Thames Valley Park were not so helpful: is it worth reporting this to the EA to see if THEY can get access to the CCTV recordings which existing?

These guys were setting up Sunday morning and, based on the breakfast contents of the mess, may have stayed over until Monday.....4-5 fishermen with laden trollies shouldnt be hard to spot.

Bl000dy people......why do they do it?

The majority of fishermen are of the chav type so they simply don't give a ***.

I'm not bothered what types people are......and have several friends who are fanatical fishermen but not what most would categorise as 'chavs'....

Whatever someone is....there's no excuse for behaviour like this.

Same as dog-walkers who don't pick up etc.

I know there are local fishermen on here who will be equally unaccepting of this: hopefully the word can be spread and this 'extremely large' gentleman and his 50-ish, short ginger-haired mate can be identified.

What ever your opinion on the type of person that enjoys fishing i think most of them do give a *** and take thier rubbish with them and normally leave the place tidier than when they got there .
If you want your complaint heard then fire off an email to a fishing mag and see if you can get them to mention it .

I used to do a lot of fishing with my lad and always took our rubbish away with us. It is unacceptable not do so.

That said I'd have been annoyed if a dog had been jumping about in the river near me. (sorry but it's annoying) I have a feeling that the local bylaws cover that as well as littering.

I'm not contesting that at all: I accept that fishermen would be pi$$ed off it and we just moved half a mile further down the river. I mentioned it solely because that's what initiated the contact and made me think 'maybe I need a pic...'

Cracking idea......anyone know the mostly widely read one?

When I were a lad, before I found boats, I was an avid fisherperson and, despite the fact that at around 17 I probably looked liked the 80's equivalent of a chav, I used to not only take my own litter home, but also anything left behind by the previous incumbent of my 'swim'.

Don't always judge a book by its cover etc etc

Good on you - most chavs won't though.

Scumbags............

Whos bit of the river is this,is it public fishing or run by a local fishing club.If run by a local club there should be notices to this effect and a day ticket would be required.
May be able to indentify the miscreants if they are club members, complaints about litter are taken very seriously by other club members.
We suffer from this down on the Medway, nearly always happens in the easy to get to spots close by bridges or other access points.
The vast majority of fisherman such as myself would be appalled at this behaviour, most clubs will go on litter collecting jaunts once or twice a year and normally in the rules somewhere is a instruction
"Pick up litter even if it not yours" .

On this subject by FAR the worse problem on both the upper and lower Medway is plastic bottles of all types from pop and especially Evian and similar water bottles and do not even mention poxy T*sco shopping bags.

This stretch is public.

What an absolute load of ballox, the vast majority of anglers respect the environment and your comments are unfounded, uneducated and very unhelpful.

You should report it, Simon, there's no excuse for this unacceptable situation. Any angler worth his salt would be helpful in halting this type of behaviour.

100% agree.

As already mentioned in previous posts, Angling Times, Anglers Mail, any carp mags etc.

Hi

I'm a regular user of the Thames Footpath at Sonning/Reading as well as a boat-owner: what I'm trying to say is that I have a great affection for the river and also spend a considerable amount of money each year enjoying it.

I also accept that the vast majority of the fishing community are exactly the same. Unfortunately there was a group of 4 last weekend who were a complete disgrace to the sport and I hope can be identified and fined.

Below is a more polite version of a post which I made this morning on the Thames Forum. Hopefully you can advise a more constructive way to post/publicise this in your pubilcation(s):-

I have no problem with him objecting: I understand how this may disrupt his planned fishing....so we just moved on down the river as we nornally do.

At the time there was something in his attitude and stance which made me feel that this wasnt the end of it.....and I was SO tempted to take photos of them......but didnt.

I've just been down there for a walk and the mess where these people were is simply unacceptable. I spoke with the lock-keeper.....and I'm not the first.....it's a disgraceful mess that was left on the Thames Footpath as well as thrown over the fence into the grounds of BlueCoat School.

The slob who we had the exchange with will be known to others: he was, mid-50's, looked 'less than intelligent' (re-confirmed by his grunts during our exchange), was 30+stone and looked barely able to waddle, never mind walk, with all his gear which included a case of 24 lagers/ciders. These are now in the black bin bag pictured below.

Where the other 3 (4?) were fishing, we now have a wonderful selection of food wrappers, cans, plastic bottles, cereal packets, food remains etc.

These 'gentlemen' managed to push trollies FULL of fishing kit plus food/drink all the way there: why the hell could they not take their $hiite away with them?

The Bull Inn are checking their CCTV to see if they were captured walking past. Thames Valley Park were less helpful, however when I write to the EA we will see if THEY can get access to the CCTV recordings which exist.

These guys were setting up Sunday morning and, based on the breakfast contents of the mess, may have stayed over until Monday.....4-5 fishermen with laden trollies shouldnt be hard to spot on CCTV or even to identify easily by other local anglers who I imagine are equally disgusted at this mess.

I look forward to your reply and help in highlighting this.

Lets see if I get a reply......

Litter.Grrrrrrrrrr.Rant Rant

Good on you...lets hope they reply.

Its very distressing sometimes to see the amount of litter dumped in our country, not only on our river banks, but around motorway roundabouts and in close vicinity to many fast food outlets, esp *cdonalds, wish they would educate some of their scummy customers.Frequently tempted to bag up all the discarded Mc containers and packaging outside my works unit, walk ascross the road and dump the ******ing lot in the lobby of their outlet.
First thing you notice when entering UK after being on holiday is the sheer amount of rubbish in the road verges.

Completely agree......that's struck me for years when leaving the airport upon our return. Its particularly noticeable when you come back from the US.

With regard to the OP......I've also sent a similar email/photos to the EA.

Will update you on any responses.

Breath....hold....dont....: rearrange into a popular phrase :D
