Re: Dame Ellen?? - Why?? Because blair needs a feel good factor

Are you lacking them or something. Or maybe that's the limit to your vocabulary?

Compared to some career civil servant, who gets one just for going to the right school and ordering sufficient paperclips before taking early retirement I reckon she should get an honour.

That said the system is so skewed and arbitary it is worthless anyway.

On a lighter note, B&Q are now playing Ellen adverts in their stores. I heard one on Saturday, played across the store at full volume, goes along something like this:

<< to the background noise of crashing waves and the wind screaming through the halyards>>

"I am Ellen Macarthur, round the world yachtswoman.....when I need a jigsaw I know I can rely on B&Q..."

all very well, but I wanted to hear the

"I am Ellen Macarthur, round the world yachtswoman... when I need a knotty pine bog seat and toothbrush holder.....

Pinning colours to masts.

The Sainsbury family tried it and look where that has got them.

Anecdotal evidence abounds where former customers shop elswhere rather than support a political position they are not comfortable.

Meanwhile, I have:

Sailed solo - for a day.

Sailed with my yacht pressed beyond it's limits - for a good few minutes at a time, done over 11 knots briefly.

Sailed in a gale - with crew, and with hardly any sail up.

Climbed the mast to fix stuff - in harbour with 2 crew below on the winches, and bumped my shin in the process.

Dealt with rig failure underway - but got the foresail sheet back on safely despite getting a slap from the clew.

Fixed the engine - on a mooring, and skinned my knuckles.

Gone without sleep - watching News 24 on the settee.

In fact, I bet I could do what she did, I've done all the bits that Ellen had to. Must be a piece of cake!

Kinda mixed on this. Part of me feels that 28 is just TOO YOUNG to be a Dame. What do they do after her next great feat...make her Pope??? - These things should be awarded at the end of a great career, not the beginning (and I hope it is just the beginning).

However, if Kelly Holmes "deserves" one, so does Ellen.

So we all go on when there is no media exposure for sailing, we get a publicly recognsed hero, and guess what she doesnt fit our model!

Ellen was sponsored to the tune of millions, so is Man United, they play their game on a nice safe field for, what is it 90 mins, then off down the boozer.

There have been many deserving sailing heros in the past who have not had the recognition they deserve, it could just be the Ellen has made the general public more aware of sailing life. There is just a chance that in future the media will take a bigger interest in sailing.

Ellen has not always had the millions at her disposal, to prove herself she had to take part in many Transat and other races without sponsorship, sleep in a portacabin to save money, so she could get to the start line. So if any of her critics would like to go through the same 5 to 6 year learning curve, giving up their nice cumfy homes, then they might, just might get the same support from B&Q. But you will have to be good, very good, as they will not give their money to just any old yachty.

Re: No you couldn\'t do it - prove it then!

"if you have got what it takes, why are you whingeing about your work? Show 101% dedication to the project of sailing round the world faster than Ellen, quit your job and comfy lifestyle for 10 years and go for it."

Simple...Sailing is boring. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

We send astronauts into space and more often than not bring them back safely. We also send Monkeys into space and if the mission warrants it we bring them back safely.
Generally astronauts like the monkey are only there for the ride, so was Ellen. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Yep, agree with you Halcyon. I think the 'Dame' bit was going too far (too soon?) and there are others who've done a lot more for less recognition.
Frankly I'm completely fed up with the whole business now and am looking forward the subject being dropped. This, at least, is my last response to it!!

Cheers Jerry

I must admit when I composed the original posting, I never took into account the charity work as I assumed the Dame was for the current feat. I hadn't heard any mention of the charity work in relation to the award or for the promotion of sailing come to think of it.

If the charity work was part of it then, okay that answers some of it, and promotion of sailing, yes, now it starts to make more sense.

How long will the record stand? Okay lets apportion credit for a brief moment. Lets say 50% to Ellen and 50% to the Boat. In 10years time technology will have moved on to the point that Ellens record may well have been shattered. Look back 10 years and ask yourself if B&Q was possible then. But if 90% is down to the boat....

Politics - I do hope this wasn't an attempt to hijack the feat for political purposes although I wouldn't put it past them.

Football - I don't understand the popularity of football or the point of it. It looses all credibility to me when a team can be made of bought players, and then represent a town that none of them have ever lived in. It would make much more sense if the teams where just called "Carling United" or "Russian Oil Crook United".

As for the other queries,

how many miles have I sailed in one go single handed? not many, don't have an autopilot fitted. current boats are both too small to justify them really.

Sea Miles and bad weather? Thousand of miles and 80+ foot seas although on commercial vessels and not under sail. I've been in weather where our captain would only sit into it at as to run for cover would have probably sunk our 200ft Survey boat, and I've been waist deep on the deck of boat in the north sea trying to free equipment so we can run for cover.

Personal sailing preferences, Yes I openly admit to being a "fair weather" sailor. T-shirt, shorts and deck shoes please.

Offshore suits, rain, cold, boat falling into every trough, nahhh, not my idea of fun.

<Ellen was just the token human on board>

You really are trying to push your ignorance of what it takes to sail a 75' trimaran single handed for 72 days, I'll bet you couldn't sail the thing at record breaking pace for a day, even if you could hoist the mainsail in the first place. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
