Dame Ellen - The fastest ever round Top Gear's Track

Re: Dame Ellen - The fastest ever round Top Gear\'s Track

She'd be a wow at F1. Imagine doing tyre changes without coming into the pits or slowing down.

Re: Dame Ellen - The fastest ever round Top Gear\'s Track

Hm yes, could do le mans singlehanded as a sprint too, I suppose. And all the very best drivers are utter shortarses - prost, stewart.

Serioulsy er if she came within a fraction of a second of Damon hill's time i reckon one of the teams should give her a track test. Well, i would if i had a team - worst that happens is plenty publicity without having to do an actual F1 grand prix, no?

Also, the f1 summer season schedules very nicely with offshore sailing in winter, so, all quite logical.

Re: Dame Ellen - The fastest ever round Top Gear\'s Track

Alternatively stuff Clarkson in to a yacht going downhill very fast in the southern ocean with Ellen and see who cries first!

Surely the qualities that lead her to win yacht races also mean that she can win car races?....

She's not actually won very many yacht races. Gets good publicity comming in second or beating records though.

(I know I'm going to get hammered for this, even though it's true)....

Re: Dame Ellen - The fastest ever round Top Gear\'s Track

I missed it but have just looked it up and its repeated Tuesday December 6 at 7pm on BBC Two for anyone else who did too.

All this praise for a woman driver can't wipe the smile from my face!!!

She's the exception that proves the rule!
Don't forget that she hit the kerb twice, went off the track at least once, skidded round three bends..........and we didn't see her park the car.

Seriously though....one of the many things that I do like about Ellen is that she is not constantly going on about "striking a blow for feminism" or any of the other cliches we constantly hear in the battle of the sexes...........she just gets on with it.

A superb sportswoman/person.

Re: Dame Ellen - The fastest ever round Top Gear\'s Track

Agreed on the feminism side.

Stopped off for a swift couple in the pub down the road this evening. A sailor I know was as pleased as I was with her result. Went on to say "she should really get an all-girl crew together for the next Volvo/rtw. Pointed out that she wouldn't want an all-girl crew. Just one that can win races.

And couldn't agree more with tcm who suggested that it wd be awfully good pr for an F1 team to film a test drive with her.

Re: Dame Ellen - The fastest ever round Top Gear\'s Track

consider yourself lihtly hammered, but in the overall scheeme of things she won the frenchies ofshore chamionship over several races where holding the boat together is important.

Re: Dame Ellen - The fastest ever round Top Gear\'s Track

I do seem to remember her winning the world offshore championship - I rather think that counts a a winner - unless of course you've done it twice. me? I just stand back in awe

Re: Dame Ellen - The fastest ever round Top Gear\'s Track

I think Clarkson was genuinely impressed having "crashed" in a Hobbiecat!! It seemed to me that he had nothing but admiration for our Ellen. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Dame Ellen - The fastest ever round Top Gear\'s Track

yes totally agree that Ellen is awesome I wasn't having a dig for feminism at all.
Just stating a fact that it made me smile that's all.

As for yr comments ref. the amounts of time she skidded, hit the kerb and that you missed her parking the car now who's being sexist? Were you the only one counting as others and me included just enjoyed watching her go around.

Re: Dame Ellen - The fastest ever round Top Gear\'s Track

I didn't think you were having a dig for feminism. I think I read your comments exactly as you meant them. Sorry if it came across as anything else.

Maybe I am sexist, but I'm too long in the tooth to change or care........and that's not intended as a wind up....it's just the reality of my inability to be PC. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

She was good though, wasn't she?

Re: Dame Ellen - The fastest ever round Top Gear\'s Track

Watched the repeat and was impressed. As she spend most of her time at sea, probable views a car as a necessary expense to get from A to B why was she so good!

Possible thoughts:

Concentration
Listened to the stig carefully and didn't think she new it all
Smooth driving style

When you consider a number of the others have had lots of experience in fast cars and probably a little racing it really was impressive.
