Damaged prop advice please

Unfortunately I damaged a prop last week. Even more annoyingly it was repaired while the boat was out over the winter. It is on an Alfa 1 outdrive. Any views on possibility of repairing in situ, rather than lifting the boat out again?
 
Agree you should be able to lift the leg and get the prop off whilst its in. Hadto do this once with my Bravo II) As has been said, make sure you get someone to hold a landing net or something underneath as you work incase you drop tools or fixings!
 
Would it dry out somewhere? Then anything dropped is easily picked up off the sand & you can work on it from any side. If not, I would hang a bucket handle over the prop - small stuff may well just fall straight thro a net.
 
you should be able to take it off while the boat is in the water get it repaired and refit just try not to drop the nut/tab washer/ and hub in tyhe water when you do it.

Many thanks for this. Can I assume that there are no oil ingress/egress issues with the prop removed? Can I lower the leg while the prop is being repaired?

Sorry if these are idiot questions.
 
Prop Change

Yes done it twice last year went stern on to the pontoon lifted the legs and managed to to get them of ok. I sent them of to streemline props got them back in the same week.I do have Volvo 280 outdrives but i think you will be able to manage it. PS I did get left and right props on the wrong legs forward was reverse reverse was forward .Have fun
 
if u look on ebay stainless ones come up weekly and have purchased a few myself.always handy to have a spare.£60-£100 is a good price to pay.
2nd for steel developments as prop new/repairers.

Many thanks for this. I have thought about SS props, but am put off a bit by the thought that currently the alu prop is the weak link in the chain, and circa £100 to fix. If the prop were more robust, and I hit something, the chances are that something more expensive would give in the outdrive leg.

Is there any relevant experience out there?
 
10 mins per prop with a bit of practice max.....

My boat has its own little kit for such a job,consisting of the required alan key,a length of steel rod to pass through a hole in the cone nut to undo it and a wooden wedge to stop the prop rotating.Have changed both props in all sorts of situations,all involving the props totally or partially submerged.
Volvo will sell happily sell me a special plastic washer for my outdrives which goes behind the propeller cone,a piece of white plastic milk bottle cut to the correct shape does the job just as well.
