Damage to raw water pump

Is it possible for a fitter to damage my water pump and causing it to leak. By not slacking the pulleys and pulling the new belts on with rope and force .i am trying to work out why my pump is now leaking when it was not befor he serviced my eng and the pump was overhaled 3y ago. Thanks dilly

is it "winterized" so the cover has been left loose

Hi Dilly, there is the potential to bend the shaft by using force because where the pulley is located at the extremity of the shaft. If it is leaking from the front cover it is possible that the gasket has not been put back correctly or a new gasket put on.

I take it that "not slacking the pulleys and pulling the new belts on with rope and force" gives an ever so subtle clue that you might not want to use that fitter again.

I did not see it I just found a rope on board after recommissioned and then it consequently over heating when it went back in the water. And him telling me eng was ok but pump has a small leak and the shaft my be worn and out of true . And thy serviced that pump 3 y ago

Quite common, especially on 2nd & 3rd year for the spring round theshaft lip seal to let go over the winter, no bodies fault, just age, leads to leaks at the shaft.

Also too long dry on first start can finish off an old seal, before the impeller is damaged.

If it is leaking from the front cover it is possible that the gasket has not been put back correctly or a new gasket put on.

Agree. If the access is easy it's a 5 min job to check.

I had to leave the boat its in west wales and I am in Cardiff.and the diagnostic was given to me over the phone .I may be wrong .but if I am not I may have gone out to sea instead of the marina and my have gotton in a bit of bother
