Started this thread as don't want to hijack useful thread showing how many are successfully getting visas for an extended stay in France.

Just want to raise one point regarding Health Insurance for Portugal.

My wife was refused state health care as SEF are taking ages to issue her residency card. [Mine was issued immediately after payment of €15 via SEF Brexit portal bit I am aware of a number being delayed due to non appearance of the payment request - Software glitch?]

However in trying to sort delay in wifes residency card the SEF insisted that under the Brexit withdrawal agreement Portugal will treat on their health system UK citizens as UK will reciprocate for Portuguese citizens in UK.

Furthermore SEF insist that production of the residency application is enough to get the treatment and we must complain.

Hence my understanding now is all that you need is proof of sufficient income (or financial independance) that I believe is the lowest in EU at just over €700pm.

Will post later on how we get on.

Mr Shan and I both managed to get our residency cards without too much fuss. Our neighbours have been less lucky. Notification for the cards was posted to them several weeks apart and unfortunately, unless you have given a friend or a lawyer POA over the issue, you have to personally collect the card from the post office. Ewe tried to collect for our neighbour but the lady at the PO politely informed us it was not possible.... so they are left having to go through the process again when they are back in April.

No need to go through the application process again. Same happened with me so I phoned he Brexit helpline. They sent me tracking details showing the card had been "returned to sender" but no address. Further enquiries showed it had been returned to Lisbon, where they processed my bio card exchange. Made appt by email for day after our return, collected the card which took 10 mins in queue.

Being Portugal, conflicting information. I had permanent residence before Brexit, registered at health centre and also issued with Portuguese EHIC. Eventually, last card expired after Brexit and on applying for new one, was refused as no social security number. Applied for SS number and was refused as had never contributed (never worked here) and told UK is still responsible for my health care. My UK EHIC card is registered in health system. Even before I had residence, never refused health treatment but had to produce UK EHIC.

There may of course be different rules for those who have moved here and formally immigrated, rather than just being here, as in my case.

Thanks, I will pass on the Information to my neighbour.

My Residents card was sent by SEF to my address and to my surprise I did not even have to sign for it.

I attended SEF interview and had photo and fingerprints taken for card and had no social security number as I have never paid tax in Portugal. It did not prevent issuing of residents card.

We had an A4 residents certificate issued in Feb16 by Nazare Camera but we had no contact with SEF until we heard that due to Brexit we needed to apply through the SEF Brexit Portal which we did. Our residents card is only 5yrs while I expected a 10yr one but it appears in SEFs application process that we only became residents on date of SEF Brexit Portal application.

Graham I suggest you check the reason for resident permit refusal as it should not be lack of social security number.

Wife attended SEF interview in January but no residents card issued yet and despite repeated phone calls and e mails just get reply her application is being processed. Mine was issued immediately after SEF interview.

Its one of the wonders of Portugal how different everyone's experience is!
