On a D6 engine, do the engine hour gauges always show the actual number of hours run or is there another log that is held in the engine management system and is only accessible via a VODA?

Finally, when an engine is serviced, is this recorded in the engine management system?

Afaik (from my friendly Vodia-tool wielding tech) the answers are yes, no, no.

Jimmy, would the engine management system keep a log of when VODIA connections have been made? Could that be used to determine whether a service engineer plugged his gizmo in?

I think what Jez's mate is trying to establish is whether a VP engineer could determine if a previous service had been performed, which at the very least would require the engineer to look up the codes.

Also, does it hold a history of engine starts and hours run. I'm just curious to know how much it could tell someone about previous usage patterns.

Come on Volvo Paul, spill the beans!

I think you can get this from the VP database, but not from the engine control unit. Whether or not it is queryable, I don't know. You'd have to ask a VP dealer.

The ECU only holds engine hours which are displayed on the rev counters, the system doesn't log engine starts or if a Vodia has been connected. But it does log how long engine parameters have been out of spec, so if you continue to drive with an overheat problem for example it will record how long you wilfully ignored the warnings from the EVC system which will affect any warranty claims.
