D6-370 Heat Exchanger Leak

Morning All,

I'm looking at purchasing a boat fitted with a pair of D6 370A-B's. During the survey, it was noticed that both engines are showing signs of water leakage from the rear end of the heat exchangers, one is showing some corrosion onto the stater motor body, the other is not quite so bad. The engines are both 2008, and it doesn't look like the heat exchangers have been apart before judging by the cap head bolts....... From what I've read this appears to be a fairly commom problem on the D4's and D6's, but what would a ball park figure be to to get these leaks fixed ??? .... (Picture of Port Engine attached hopefully)....

To do it properly, around €1800 for both, using the volvo o rings & seals.
Ideally the plastic end caps need replacing with aftermarket bronze caps, add another €1600 ish.

If left, it rots the aluminium housing for the oil cooler, no longer available but usually can be welded.

That’s normal for that age , now you say heat exchanger, do you mean intercooler or heat exchanger as the intercooler o ring fails and drips down on to the end cover area of the heat exchanger, then to the starter motor , either way it looks like you need the intercooler and heat exchanger removing for reseal and cleaning .

The Surveyor said it was the heat exchangers, and it certainly looks like it from the pictures he sent which I'll try and post again below (Pics are of the Port Side Engine).......... I'll take a closer look myself in a couple of days now lockdown has lifted slightly....... Looks like this will be a further discussion point prior to any final decision on purchase.

The other slight cause for concern that the Surveyor picked up on is the condition of the coolant. On the same Port engine with the largest heat exchanger leak, the coolant is slightly sludgy. He said it doesn't appear to be rusty so the inhibitors are probably doing their job, and it doesn't appear to be oily either. I can't beleiive that the coolant would have only been changed on one engine during scheduled servicing, and I don't know yet if there was a recent water pump or hose etc that was swapped out on the Starboard engine which means the coolant that side is a whole lot newer......... If the coolant is the same age, then I'm worried that this might point to something more serious than a simple drain, flush and replace. There were no visible signs of water in the oil or emulsion under the filler cap etc, so I'm at a bit of a loss on this at the moment without trying to find out a bit more about what has been done fairly recently to one engine and not the other ?? As always appreciate any thoughts you might have on this..... Hopefully pics of the coolant below as well. ... Just to add, both engines are 2008 and have around 550 hours on them.....

Im not sure your surveyor knows the difference between the intercooler and heat exchanger , looking at your pics the damage from salt water is around the end of the heat exchanger but your pics show the oil pressure control valve housings in shot and the starter motor .
what you are up against is a whole new ball game there bec of the damage your not only looking at removal and strip down but also the cost of new oil cooler housings as well , you will be in for a shock cost wise .

before you buy it would make sense to employ a volvo engineer to go and quote for all the work required , is this a uk boat?
oh and looking at the coolant condition I can tell you that boat has had very little in the way of correct servicing , maybe it’s been a DIY owner job that thinks a service is oil and filters . The coolant hasn’t been changed for years in the right picture which means the heat exchangers will require stripping down to clean the external side of the tube stacks plus the block flushing out .
