D4 or KAD43?

No one has really mentioned the difference in drives. 290/DPE drive is good and pretty bullet proof. DPH, or is it DPG, that comes with the D4 is the one with the steering rams on the outside and lots of problems with the seals going, leading to saltwater contamination of the hrdraulic fluid.

had my d4 3 years from new done 380 hours apart from sucking up a jelly fish
which caused a overheat ive had no problems touch wood.think they are a very reliable engine.:):):):)

Not sure of where the perception of soot comes from with the kads. Granted they smoke a bit on a cold startup but I have never had soot on the transom.

I was on a trip with a taxi boat some month ago. He had 2*D4 260. The engines had a lot of trouble and one was alredy replaced after 2000h. But the drives were worse.
He claimed it was unpossible to get more than 1000h.

Volvo have a service bulletin on the drive. Som plastic shim needs to be replaced by som steel shims. The plastic ones don't take the heat .

Were I live main trouble is injektors. All peasure engines are running on tax free MGO.
This contains particles that destroy injectors. A supplier of a bit larger engines had replaced 500 bosch injektors on one engine type. The cost of one injector was about
£1500 but the real cost was sending a guy out replasing them. Air tickets, hotels and work hour also have a cost. Downtime on the engines were mainly avoided.

I wonder if this is the way it's been used and maintained. Personally, I'd hate the idea of leaving any drive under water, I keep mine out of the water, and this is it after 700hrs and 5 years.
