D4-300 or D3-220 Dilema

It was never fully solved, but the frequency of failure has been reduced quite significantly by fitting the gaiters and the cost of the rams reduced to 200 quid, so it's not a big deal anymore
you mean 200 Euro each steering ram/per leg, I need new ones now and paid much more 4 years ago?

£250 here from Golden Arrow, so maybe £200 is achievable. Still, chucking £400+ at a problem every few years due to Volvo's poor design would grate on me a bit.

DPH Rams

A very important question is the year of the boat, the current D3 is a very different engine (apparently) to the old D3, which I think didn't have the best of reputations (Google it).

Either way, everything else being equal, I'd take the bigger capacity and more powerful engine every time. So D4 for me please.

Apologies for opening up an old thread again but what dates/models differentiate 'old' D3 and new ones?
I have a bunch of viewings of boats lined up over the next week and most have Volvo engines, mostly D4, one with D6 and one D3, specifically this one:

Is this an old D3 I should run away from?

That antifouling you're using on those props - maybe apply it to the rest of the drives next year? :D

Its not about the antifoul (if any) on the props, it the material of the G-series DPH props which is made from NiBrAl which is more resistant to marine growth.
The newer stainless props fouls like he** in comparison
