Hi,

A friend of mine has a new SC29 and is itching to get some boating in - but he's got a problem with his port lump. I'm no expert on these whizzy ECU controlled things, so hoping someone can give him some pointers. Everything was fine, but recently underload it won't go beyond just under 3000rpm.

Problem occurred before and volvo had a fiddle and proclaimed it 'fixed', but its re-occurred. They've swapped ECUs and problem remained with port lump. Lots of sucking of teeth going on at volvo, but no fix forthcoming. There was talk of 'new calibration codes' being needed.

Anyone seen this before? What questions should my friend be asking Volvo, and how do you get them to sort these things out quickly?

Cheers,
Rick

Ok so it's a warranty problem... It's no bloody excuse for Volvo to drag their heels so ...
They seem to be taking a nose dive in the popularity stakes in recent years for build quality and warranty issues and we can never find the big cheese to offload these issues.
Get on the phone and don't get off until you feel there is a man hot footing it down to the boat immediately.
Are Volvo Really not bothered any more ????

Amazing isnt it, they put this engine in a car and its great, put it in a boat and its a load of crap, maybe they should not have painted it green!

As for the revs, have they changed the air filter to the later type? as a dealer they shold have as the old one didnt give enough air flow so it shuts down the fuel rate to compensate for lack of air, ahh these new eco friendly engines bring back the old sabres, at least you could see where you have come from on a cold morning!

Was hoping you'd reply - thanks, I'll ask the question.

Frustrating that more than 50% of the engine hours have so far been on troubleshooting! Two training course have been affected - and my friend is getting well and truly peed off with the buck-passing...

Hi there,

bring back the old sabres, at least you could see where you have come from on a cold morning!

In 50 years it will be,

bring back the old D3 - 190 Volvo, at least you could see where you have come from on a cold morning!

They should be able to snag it by then.

regards,
Les. Smokey two Sabre`s.

By coincidence I was viewing a couple of boats yesterday, and the broker suggested another model they area a dealer for may suit and dug out the brochure. "Engines 2 x D3-190" it said; ahh says he, "forgot that, perhaps best to forget that one then. They're not the best engines Volvo make. " This is no help to your friend other than it seems he is not alone.

Rick-The boat next door to me is a SC29 with D3 190`s Trevor the owner had virtually no season at all with the bloody engines coming up with fault codes every trip out. He got to the stage where he phoned Sealine threatening to return the boat as "Not fit for purpose" as the local Volvo dealer couldnt sort them out. The MD of Sealine UK contacted Trevor and arranged for a Volvo techy to come down from Watford. This chap spent the day on the boat with his Laptop and not only cured all the problems but got it doing 32kts where it wouldnt reach 28 before. A call to Sealine along similar lines might be the way for your friend to go. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

32 knots is okay, but Sealine claim 33-35kts for twin D3-190's

I'm still a bit puzzled how an older, heavier hull (an S28) can pull 34kts at the start of the season with clunky old mechanical injection KAD32's that are 170hp each? Even with an end-of-season weed beard and two outdrives loaded up with barnacles, she'll still do 32 kts...

dv.

thats because the kad32 develops more like 190hp, the d3 160 was meant to replace the 32 but when sealine put in it in the 29 it didnt perform and they had to keep the 32 in production until volvo upped the bhp to match it.
i asked the rep at sibs about the amount of electronics on d3, he went very quiet and shyd away from any real questions....

Spannerrash - do you know who the techy was from Watford? and where is Trevors boat located?
(I'm the friend of Ricks! getting very frustrated with Sealine and D3's)
thx

Bit sad to hear this D3 reputation going down the tubes, a friend of mine bought a 'Cruisers' 300 at the beginning of the year. He obviously had no idea that potentially, he could be about to get problems. The boat has been struggling to manage 22 knots for some time.

He's moored in the upper Hamble and weed growth is a problem. After lifting and cleaning, straight back to 32 knots and they appear to have run well on all occasions. So apart from the sad reports we get here, the D3s' seem very well suited when they're running well!

Hopefully, you'll get it sorted soon and let us know what they found please.
Good luck.

My D3-190 problems seemed to have been solved! The key issue was with the electric throttles - EVC's not the main engines. Volvo engineers did a full reset and set up with some new calibration codes from Volvo. Have carried out testing yesterday and today and now pulling nearly 36kts in my Sealine SC29 at just around 3800rpm, so looking good right now. Heres hoping it stays that way.
