I want to remove and inspect the exhaust elbow:
Do you need to drain the coolant before you unbolt this guy?

the "2-bolt casting" is, I guess, the seawater entry?Thank you, do you mean these two guys here?

Yes, the seawater entry as the other has said, it gets to be very weak. I would leave on whilst inspecting the other, if its rotten as they can be, then both new ones will be needed. www.parts4engines.com are the boys!Thank you, do you mean these two guys here?

By the way, this is exactly the same part number for the MD22 seriesThe amount of rust on the outside of that seawater entry, added to the fact the paint on the elbow itself has not been disturbed, makes me wonder if that elbow has ever been off. I may, if I can make the 'boat credits' last (remortgage the dog, don't eat, cancel Christmas, that sort of thing) treat myself to one of these:
Volvo Penta D2-55A and D2-55B Stainless Steel exhaust outlet and connector
Hmm do you paint it Volvo Green? I guess being stainless, you should leave it naked?
I actually made one from SS, a mate with a machine shop made the flange, I got a 2" bsp threaded piece of pipe welded to it, then 2" bsp 45 deg elbow threaded on that, then a 2" bsp threaded water injection point from Asap. The amount of rust on the outside of that seawater entry, added to the fact the paint on the elbow itself has not been disturbed, makes me wonder if that elbow has ever been off. If you try to clean the two bolt inlet it will fall apart! Guess how I know? Also check that there isnt a porous rusty spot on the outside of the big elbow, my original as porous there. There should be a couple of ports inside where the raw water exits and mixes with the exhaust gases. That was surprisingly easy to remove - I was expecting a fight. Went down for five minutes at lunch, and popped it straight off. Rarely do boat things go so easily!
The exhaust airways are pretty clear.

However, the water injection elbow is circa 50% rusted closed.

I also discovered this hose that comes from the block to the anti siphon loop that goes to the exhaust elbow that has previously come apart - best I replace that too I suppose:

Do we think this is worth saving? Chisel out the inlet, stand it in white vinegar to clean it out, wire brush the internals, paint it, buy a new gasket and then refit? Or splash the cash on the stainless one?
