At £56 the non reusable air filter is a real rip off. I get that it incorporates some sort of silencer function but has anyone fitted a simpler air filter - one of the cone shaped ones that are on the bigger engines for instance

ooft , just looked at that , I would be cutting round the edge of that with a small dremmel and diy a filter insert .

My VP2003 had a steel mesh filter. When it dissolved into rusty holes, I found a suitable plastic container that fitted the mounting plate, drilled several 25mm holes to let the air in and filled it with washing up sponges, green side facing out as a coarse filter, yellow facing in. It cost me less than a fiver, the engine didn't mind, and it was almost certainly more effective than the old mesh.

Ok, I’ve dremeled the old unit open, unhelpfully the element inside is fixed with hot glue so had to wrestle that. The element is 14x13x1. Has anyone sourced that. Google AI with its American hat on tells me this is not a standard size for any car filter but is common in HVAC systems

Can you not take the whole VP filter box off and fit a K&N style filter instead, maybe the one that parts4engines sell for the MD2xxx series if the diameter is correct? - or is that actually what you are asking!

Its a bit more complicated than that. The sealed Volvo unit is actually the engine silencer as well so I reckon if I did fit a can filter the noise increase would be significant. Screenshot (17).png

I had the same thoughts and tried a k&n but it was definitely noisier. Unfortunately I think its one of those situations where you eff and Jeff but have no alternative but to pay up
