Hi we have a new to us targa 52. With D12 -715. Engines. We have an issue with the starboard exhaust is noticeably dirtier that the port. The engines have done 340 hrs and we have had Volvo down and they have plugged voida in and gone through everything and no faults found, would a faulty injector be picked up by the computer ? Or is there anything we have missed
You may ask why didn't I ask engineer. .... they were Spanish with very limited English .....

Did they just plug in at dockside or carry out sea trial with vodia plugged in , it sounds like the engine could have a boost issue hence not burning fuel , the intercooler plays a big part on this engine, as its fresh water cooled it can block up if the coolant and coolant filter isn't changed every 2 years , I've seen them get that hit the paint burns off the pipework and the cooler even melting the plastic cover on top. Because the heat is high it weakens the fuel off creating less boost .

If they just checked dockside it was a waste of time if you had no fault codes .

Boost temp and pressure need checking under load. As Paul says the intercooler can get blocked. You don't have a plastic cover to melt on yours but it is a good indication of the problem on the 800's
I take it the air filter is clean.

Changing coolant and coolant filter won't clean out the aftercooler if it is already getting blocked. The system would need to be flushed with oxalic acid.
It may be getting blocked on the air side.

Is there any loss of performance anywhere through the rev range?

Its difficult to tell as we have only had it a few months so don't really know what to expect. It's been getting slightly lethargic to get on the plane but I dare say there is some fouling on it now ,previous to us buying it I suspect it's been unused for a time

We had this on new to us s58. Came in from a long run and one side black one clean. Horror. Call Volvo.

Volvo on board. Sea trial with vodia nothing.

Next trip minor black on one side.

I concluded that the wind was pushing the fumes on one side and off the other.

We checked turbo free, file filters clear and air filter and ran without it.

We get mild black smoke when going on the plane.

Acceleration wise it is slow until 1400 rpm ish when turbo kicks in then it pulls like a train if that helps.

There is another forumite cloud nine who has a rebuilt engine on one side. Sooty. Volvo and vodia again say nothing.

Mine is now pretty even soot wise so not sure if my wind theory was correct but whatever it was has gone away.

Without knowing what the relevant boost readings should be, you should be able to check the boost pressure via the multifunction readouts using either the graph mode or the live pressure figure, not the plotter system, the small configurable readouts for each engine if you have them. If both are showing similar/ different boost pressures would that help to indicate whether or not it's the turbo on one side ? I don't know myself so that's me asking that question in case it helps diagnose anything. :)
