D1-30 exhaust elbow paint

At the start of last season I replaced the exhaust elbow.
The engine had lost power without any warning as we were manoeuvring in our home marina. A quick trip to the Volvo agent produced a genuine replacement.
I was surprised that it was black not green, but fitting it was an easy job and full power was restored the same day.
But checking the engine recently, the elbow is speckled with rust.
Should I have painted it before fitting?
Any advice for painting it? I will have to remove it to do this properly.

My whole engine got green Smoothrite. It lasted pretty well, but it was a good while ago, so it may have been before elfin safety ruined paint.

Thanks. I was wondering if there is any reason the spare part isn’t green or if it needs heat resistant paint.

I don't recall any problems, but if it's the wrong paint, at least it'll remove itself!

I have the same engine and although I’m not currently experiencing any drop in performance, it is eight years old and some of the old salts around me are telling me that the exhaust elbow should now be replaced. Can I ask how old your exhaust elbow was and how you found the job of removing it? Any tips or suggestions? And was a replacement hose also required?

I expected to have to replace the elbow, but I thought I would experience a progressive loss of power.
The boat was afloat for the winter, I motored it round to the marina hoist and it just lost all power.
I’ve just removed the elbow to paint it today. Looking inside the casting, it’s rusty. I wonder if full winterisation ashore leads to less corrosion. I’ve never considered winterisation afloat on the south coast but maybe it’s best to service the engine and winterise the cooling system in the autumn even afloat.

Thank you. Helpful information. I keep my boat afloat through the winter but flush antifreeze through the raw water system for the three or four months we don’t sail. Not sure how long the elbow should last but I will check it out in the next few weeks.

I have some very old BP green paint in the garage. It is probably over 15 years old. It smell very toxic. Point is though- it still works. Can’t imagine a new paint these days lasting as long. So where is the environmental impact?
