I'm chartering from Poros in early Julyand planning to sail east to the Cyclades. There's an island about 25 miles east of Poros called Attiki which doesnt get a mention in any of the guidebooks. Looks like a good first night stop. Has anybody been there or know anything about it? All contributions gratefully received.

p.s had a great time in the Whitsundays and would thoroughly recommend it, also many thanks to Ray for fixing up a day's sailing round Sydney harbour. We all have many happy memories of the trip but an hour's snorkelling over the coral off Hayman Island would have made the journey worthwhile alone. Let me know if you want any further info.

Try anchoring off Sounian on the mainland for an overnight en route to Cyclades. Watch out for the strong Northerlies in July. Have a good trip!

AND....

don't leave the boat to go ashore to a taverna. The holding there is deceptive. You think you're well in and suddenly it breaks out.

Saronic Gulf/ Gulf of Argolis

(Almost on topic)
Having spent a shore-based holiday in the Nafplion area, I fancied the idea of a bareboat charter pottering around the Gulf of Argolis, but all the charter firms seemed to operate out of Athens or nearby, which is too far to get there and back in a leisurely week. Neilson operate out of Porto Heli, but they seem to concentrate on flotillas. Does anyone know of bareboat charter based in Porto Heli, Nafplion or similar? I would be looking for a 35ish footer.

If the weather is suitable and you make a really early start you can get over to Merikhas on Kythnos in a day. That's a better bet than Sounion if you want to spend most of your time in the Cyclades.

It usually gets rougher once you are past Agios Georgios so don't be deceived by the calm seas near Poros.

Make sure you get a good forecast as July is meltemi season and you could get stuck in the Cyclades. We usually reckon to lose at least one day a fortnight if we sail there in the summer. You'll be fine going south or west, but I expect you'll have to return the yacht to Poros. Consider heading back to the Saronic with a day to spare unless you are sure the weather is favourable.

Cheers

Re: Saronic Gulf/ Gulf of Argolis

I suggest you charter from Seafarer in Poros www.seafarercruises.com Please mention my name if you book.

You can get round to Porto Kheli from Poros in a day, then head over to the eastern Peloponnese the next and work your way up.
The prevailing wind is southerly so remember that you'll be sailing back against it.

Thanks, Melody, hadn't thought of Poros but it certainly seems more feasible than Athens. We will not be doing it this year though as we have arranged to go to St Martin in the Caribbean.
